A mainstream term that refers to all South Asians. Some Bangladeshis, Sri Lankans and Pakistanis don't like being referred to as Indian, so Desi is a better term.

That's a good question, I certainly don't agree with the UN'a definition which includes Iran. Most of the definitions I hear would say countries on the Indian plate and also countries influenced by Vedic culture.

What's wrong with Desi? It's much easier than saying South Asian. We could also just use Asian but that would be confusing.

I think the UN includes Iran probably because of the early Indo-Iranian roots of Dharmic and Persian cultures. But that's for greater Southern Asia, not South Asia proper.

The SAARC doesn't include Iran, but includes Bhutan (a Tibeten nation), while Afghanistan (geographically Central Asian) just joined this month.

You know why I don't like the term 'Desi'

I think using Asian as a moniker for us is a good thing, but East Asians and American Europeans think other-wise.

Nah, only Americans think otherwise. The word Asian has completely different meanings in Europe.
