HA NOI — Viet Nam and Iran should promote existing relations and enhance co-operation in the future to contribute to each others’ development, said National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong yesterday.

The chairman made the comments in a meeting with Iranian Vice President Mohammad Aliabadi, who is also head of Iran’s Sports Organisation, in Ha Noi.

Trong said he believed Aliabadi’s visit would help consolidate friendly relations and multi-faceted co-operation between the two countries.

Iran’s vice president expressed his pleasure in visiting the capital and seeing the country’s renewal and active development firsthand.

Aliabadi said enhancing co-operation between Viet Nam and Iran would contribute to the prosperity of each country and further development in Asia.

Swapping officials

Also yesterday, high ranking sport officials from Viet Nam and Iran agreed on a wide-ranging plan that will see them swap referees, share sport-related research and exchange teaching techniques.

Vietnamese Sports Minister Nguyen Danh Thai and Mohammad Aliabadi said the agreement would strengthen ties between the two countries.

"Sport is the best way to glue the relationship between Iran and Viet Nam and we should open a new page for the two countries’ sport," Aliabadi said.

The deal includes exchanges of referees, coaches and sports medicine specialists and calls for conferences and scientific seminars on athletics. — VNS
