My dad's surname is Bautista which is quite common prob because of the hispanic roots of it but my mum's surname is Ymson which I haven't seen anywhere else at all. Does anyone here have or know someone else with this surname? I'm pretty curious to know what it's origins are.

Ymson comes from a Chinese name, probably Im-sun. The spelling denotes that your mother's Chinese ancesots came to the Philippines during the era of Spanish colonization.
For Bautista, my dad has ancestors surnamed Bautista. They come from the municipality of Imus in Cavite, and are descendants of early Filipino datus in Imus before Spanish colonization who mixed with the Chinese. They also have minimal amounts of Spanish blood which can be traced to the Spanish province of Aragon. The bautista family of Imus are also related to the Perez de Tagle family, a family who is more Hispanicized in terms of blood. Both Bautista and Perez de Tagle clans come from old Filipino nobilities and have produced a great deal of the country's top caliber actors and actresses, as well as leading politicians and senators.

Hi im danny imson
Im just taking my chances since this thread is almost a year old
Im from Baguio and Ymsons and Imsons are relatives, my titas told me the older Imsons chaned "y" to "i" only for convenience. Our elders here came from the area of Malabon here in Manila.
Well Im actually doing a research of our ancestry, I'm really interested to know about our chinese or korean roots. My chinese friends told me there's no "son" in the chinese language but there is "sun or soon" as well as koreans, im not really sure about the "ym" part. One tita told our surname was originally written as "Ym-son". Maybe our folks from the malabon area would know better, im currently on my way in investigating on this area. You know Imsons and Ymson in Baguio are just settlers during the pre-war period. Major notable features Ive noticed, most of us are chinese looking, very distinct. Fair skinned and singkit. Also we are notably intelligent as for the records. hehe..but you know my Lolo was called "tatay Tanshong/ Tan Chiong" and my dad was called kuya "Tanshong/Tan Chiong". Im not sure though how your grandparents physical attributes are.... do they look very chinese too?
you might want to see my friendster account, i posted pictures of our relatives there: dannyimson@yahoo.com

Isn't Bautista also in Mexico?
I think it varies, some branch of it are more Asian while other branches are more Hispanic. I know a friend who's surname is Bautista, he has Spanish and Chinese ancestry.

Yeah. The name relates to "John the Baptist". I'm pretty sure what the surname signifies is that the person was baptized, so it's no wonder that the name is quite common.

Bautista means Baptist. Like the Baptist religin. I do know Batista without the letter "u" spells a last name. Cuba, one of Cuba last right wing dictators last name was Batista without the letter'u".
I found out 10 290 people in Spain have the last name Bautista. Its originally from the Kingdom of Aragón from the town of "de Mallén" in the todays province of Zaragoza. Aragón stopped being a kingdom officially in 1707 since the Spanish Kingdom absorbed and did away with the Aragón crown. They have there own language called Aragonese which has been hit hard. Read this:

You can trace your surname here if its Hispanic and Ymson does not have results but Bautista has.
http://www.traceit.com/Aquino is actually Italian in origin.
