Philippines Announces Pullout to Save Iraq Hostage

Mon Jul 12, 2004 07:08 PM ET

By Alistair Lyon

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The Philippines said on Monday it would withdraw its troops from Iraq as soon as possible to save a Filipino hostage threatened with death by militants.

CNN quoted unidentified Philippine officials as saying they expected truck driver Angelo de la Cruz to be released on Tuesday, but no independent confirmation was available.

Al Jazeera broadcast footage of Philippine deputy foreign minister Rafael Seguis reading out a statement, which the television station translated into Arabic, shortly after the expiry of a new execution deadline set by the militants.

"In response to your request, the Philippines ... will withdraw its humanitarian forces as soon as possible," Seguis said according to the translation of the statement, addressed to the Islamic Army in Iraq group holding 46-year-old de la Cruz.

"I hope the statement that I read will touch the heart of this group," said Seguis. "We know that Islam is the religion of peace and mercy."

The group had extended a previous execution deadline by 24 hours for Manila to bow to demands for an early withdrawal of its troops from U.S.-led forces by July 20.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's government in Manila had said it would not change plans to withdraw its 50 soldiers, all working on humanitarian projects, as scheduled on August 20.

EMERGENCY MEETING

Seguis gave no date for a withdrawal, and Philippine officials declined comment. Foreign Ministry officials in Manila were holding an emergency meeting.

Hostage standoffs over the past few months have posed a major test of wills for Iraq's new interim government, Washington and U.S. allies with troops in the country.

"We certainly have heard nothing from the Philippine government other than what they have been saying, which is that they intend to maintain their presence through August (20th), said a State Department official, asking not to be named.

Seriously the Filipino force is just too small to do anything in Iraq, the U.S only wants the Phillipines there to show that they have "international support".

Having 1 guy beheaded because of a force of only around 50 troops that don't really do anything should mean that the Phillipines should withdraw.

you guys arent even filipino, i do not care much for your opinons in this matter! Especially you osak icon_rolleyes.gif

Well I would like to see Arroyo withdraw her troop right now for the savior of a human life. Wether America and the UN appreciated or not. She is doing the right thing for humanitarian.

I support Arroyo to withdraw the troops immediately. I almost burst into tear by looking at the photos of family members from their village pleading for the safe return of Angelo de La cruz.

Saving life is more important than continuing killing.
dalawapo
wow so if the terrorist kidnap another filipino and demand the president to give them all a million dollars, she should do it?

the Philippines was not there for the US since RP did not participate in the war rather, it heeded to the UN's call for humanitarian help... and as a member of the international organization, the Philippines did send 51 troops just as sort of representation to the commitment as a member of the international community.

sadly, the withdrawal of such a small group just strengthens the move of the terrorists to kidnap other nationalities to force them into leaving Iraq. more damaging internationally, is the Philippine government's stance on terrorism that, since 9/11 was a staunch supporter on the war on terror.

embarassedlaugh.gif Withdrawing the Philippine troops momentarily does not mean that we bow to the damands of these groups.........

We will be back someday! A good soldier knows how to retreat and surrender and fight another day!

Well just remember that the iraqi resistance are not the only terrorists. The american soldiers are the biggest terrorists, for invading and occupying a sovereign country and murdering thousands of civilians.

But i agree with you about Ek-ek. She seems to be posting stupid yet irrelevant comments in every topic.
