Yeah, balikbayans still call the country, P.I. as in Philippine Islands. Annoys me very much.

Hate Filos and Flips too. I'd rather be called Pinoy, at least we Pinoys coined "Pinoy".
*promo
calling me a flip is the same as you calling a black dude a N*gga.

yeap i prefer pinoys.

FLIP isnt too bad. my version = Fine Lookin Island People if u want to interpret it that way. pinoys dont give a damn if ppl call it flip, cuz the majority is ignorant of its history anyways. its up to the individual to be offended of it or not. i think its stupid and not stupid at the same time if a person somewhat gets offended by this. if a person just wanted the same respect or attention as the blacks by comparing flip with n**ga, then thats stupid and it annoys the hell outta me. its funny, cuz i know a couple of ppl getting all pissd when some other non pinoys call them this way, while they themselves dont even know how it came about. id get offended if i were called indio, but flip to get recognition, being wannabe and all that is BS. if a person gets offended because they understand the history, and is smart enough to pick up a person's approach, then thats understandable.

I've never seen "Filo" until i saw it on AF. I don't think that word has any history behind it though, just a lazy way to say Filipino. "Flip" has some history behind it tho. I wouldn't say calling a Filipino "Flip" is like calling a black person the "N word" White ppl around here call black ppl the "N word" a lot, but they usually apply it to certain black ppl who are acting a certain way, but not to all black ppl. For instance, I was in the lunch line and some black guys skipped a white girl and she goes "Those n!ggers just skipped me!" So to her, the guys are "n!ggers" because they were acting up, but some decent black person wouldn't be considered a "n!gger" to her. (I'm not justifying the use of the word, just telling you how it is around here) See it's different w/ the word "Flip" because i've never heard a non-Filipino calling someone a "Flip" because they were acting a certain way. Ppl just say "Flip" because they're too lazy to say Filipino.

QUOTE
Flip is a term used colloquially by Filipino American youth to refer to those of Filipino descent.

According to the late journalist and activist Alex Fabros, Sr. (1903–1999), the term was first used among Filipinos sometime after his immigration to the United States in 1929.[citation needed]

While Flip is usually used inoffensively, the folk etymology of the term is that it is an acronym for fu-king little island people which was allegedly coined by American soldiers during World War II.

Wow I never knew that man! Its a good things Pinoy here in America rarely use that term anymore, we just say were "Filipino"

i don't like the terms flip or filo...think it sounds stupid.

but whats wrong with P.I. or R.P. ... i think its okay to shorten a country or state (UK, CA, NY)... it saves time when writing.

honestly, i think 'fu-king little island people' is a backronym, but the fact that people use it in such a way disturbs me nonetheless. i prefer the term pinoy.

filo, however, is by far the dumbest.

You know alot of Pinoys that use the term flip probably doesnt even know what it really means. Im guessing people just jumped that band wagon once they found out people started using it somehow

just looked at what i posted and "flip" was coined in the Philipines-American war not in WW2, maybe it just came into light or was coined just then.

why don't we just refer to each other as to what region we come from like luzonian/bisayan/mindanaoan

I dunno what the big deal is. I live in Australia and almost every Filipino person I know uses the term 'filo' or 'flip' - I hear 'filo' the majority of the time. It's just a shortened version of 'filipino' and I really don't the see the negative connotation in it.

same here have not agianst Filo but Flip pisses me off instantly.

African American Pinoy = Egoy embarassedlaugh.gif

Seriously, Maldita, I heard Bisoy in Manila. Alam mo naman kaming mga taga Luzon e Manilacentric. What is Bisdak BTW? beerchug.gif

ilocoy ka jan!! hahaha embarassedlaugh.gif really, bisoy?? talaga itong mga ignorante.. joos kooh!! embarassedlaugh.gif (no offense nga pala. hehehe)

ibig sabihin ng BISDAK ay BISAYANG DAKO, na ang ibig sabihin naman ay LAKING BISAYA.. but we dont really restrict the term to those who literally grew up here. anyone bisaya, and proud to be one, we refer ourselves as such..

uuuy, wag naman yung egoy.. pano naman napunta yan jan? confused.gif

OK, so that settles it. we have concluded that if anybody that uses the word "Filo" ever again will be issued a warning.
