I think this puts a perspective on things. As well I like their policy, I'd rather people be honest whether I'm truly wanted or welcomed than let me in and made to feel uncomfortable or not really wanted like how many westerners do.

This is more complicated than it looks. Most of the times, the stores/bars don't let foreigners in because none of their staff speaks english. That's also why a lot of the "Japanese only" places allow you to come in with a native Japanese friend. If you speak Japanese, let them know and they might actually let you in (it worked for me). What's funny is that it is technically illegal to have such restrictions (but those laws aren't really inforced).

Oh, its ONLY the Japanese that allow this kind of racism. God damned Western media always tries to present themselves as morally superior. Try going into a club in, say, Canada, with a beard and turban, and see what happens (I'm a Sikh, so this applies to me). There have been SO many instances of being excluded from certain institutions for Sikhs that I am aware of. I remember when a Sikh WWII veteran tried to enter a club for war veterans for Remembrance Day (Canadian day to commemorate the World Wars), the Whites wouldn't even let him in because of his turban!!
Not to mention the numerous clubs that exclude women (like that golf club that Tiger Woods got a lot of heat for being a member of).

I prefer Japan over rest of Asia. Even though Japan is not perfect, but it way better than most countries in the world.
The U.S is not perfect, but it is better than Russia.

Haha, maybe 10 years ago when whites were still something special in major cities. Nowadays, it's basically no big deal. Unless you're well rehearsed in Japanese customs you are not going to impress most people just being white. Now, if you want to see some racism in Japan, just go to the country side, or better yet, talk to some WWII survivors (not all of them are racist though, that goes for country people as well). There are some people in Japan that just can't believe that Anglo's are even capable of speaking Japanese, and actually, even if you are speaking to them in Japanese, they can't hear it. I take it that you've never actually been to Japan, maybe you've heard some interesting tall tales though! laugh.gif

Oh, and yeah you should exclude us from your country, that way we don't outsource jobs to your country and you won't be the super power you are now. That's a fantastic idea. Really biggthumpup.gif

This is true. The only places you're ever likely to see exclude foreigners are the seedy (often illegal) yakuza owned sex clubs and hostess clubs (like in Kabukicho, in Tokyo). Most of the other signs in that video simply implied that the staff don't speak any English (like the sign that said 'caution: Japanese only'). There are a very few regular places that exclude, but they are literally one in a million (and way off the beaten track). Basically foreigners have no trouble at all entering 99.999% of all shops in Japan, and will receive better service on average than in any other country. Nevertheless, I agree anti-discrimination laws should be enforced, even on those rare cases.

Actually, I was there for a month during my deployment in the Navy. I stayed in Okinawa. And although I haven't seen any of these signs, must be outskirts cities, I have been through Tokyo and Okinawa and they are good people. But I feel like they are putting on a face just for us "foreigners". That is all. I'm not racist against them as bihari says. Why Bihari keeps assuming things about people is beyond me when Indian people are known as peaceful, non confrontational types.

I think racism is more prevalent in the country side (inaka). In big cities, especially Tokyo, it is quite cosmopolitan and overt racism is quite rare. It often gets exagerrated anyway. Like those neo-facists in the black vans with the loud speakers are more like side-show clowns than a serious threat to anyone (they are like a joke, and nobody pays attention to them). I can guarantee that Koreans and Chinese (and anyone else for that matter) have no problems at all getting into places anywhere in Tokyo (except some of the yakuza owned sex shops, which are often not legal, and Japanese only). It's a pretty similar situation to Korea, where Seoul is more open, but the countryside has a lot more xenophobic people with provincial attitudes (actually almost every country on earth follows the same pattern).

But sorry to say, Korea is more racist overall than Japan... there's simply no question (ask anyone). I won't deny that Japanese are often racist deep down, but at least they keep it to themselves, which is better in my opinion (ie. no drunk ajosshi's yelling or assulting guys on the street just cuz they're white, or have a Korean girlfriend etc.). But as much as racism sucks and should be stamped out, it's not the end of the world - foreigners have no problem living happily in either country, if they so choose..

That is your opinion and I respect that. But it's not a fact. I'm not racist. Maybe a bit prejudice, but who isn't? Nobody is perfect. But I agree on your take about out regions of cities. They tend to be disconnected with others. But who can they blame?

No, I'm neither Japanese or Korean. And I am mainly just speaking from my experience in both countries, but also from what literally everyone I've spoken to thinks about it as well. I think most Koreans are good and tolerant, but the racism there can be pretty brutal... Just look at all the Koreans (and Chinese as well) on this forum bashing so-called 'asiaphiles' and non-Koreans who want to date/marry Koreans (promoting racial segregation), and all the blind hatred toward Japan (like calling Miss Japan an "ugly Japanese b1tch" on the other thread). I'm not saying Koreans are the only ones who do this, but I think they get more carried away about it. I have met quite a few good Korean friends, whom I really like and respect a lot, but it was always disappointing to hear them insult and disrespect the Japanese... I can guarantee you that most Japanese people don't talk like that about Koreans (if anything Japanese people just get annoyed at all the prejudice against them and the hostility).

The Japanese may have their deep down racist beliefs (like so many people do), but I still find them to be quite tolerant overall. This is my opinion (based on my experience), feel free to disagree. I'm not trying to bash Korea, because I honestly do like it, but the level of in-your-face racism is hard to ignore.

something similar comes to mind. I just know like in LA. From what i experienced. Black people talk crap about white people all they want. But the White people dont dare say a word about the black people. And they tend to take all the trash talk. For example i use to have this crazy english class when i was a senior. I had this white teacher and he tended to be pretty racist. All the black kids would yell in class "Cracker!!" "Honkey!!!" "Redneck!!" And the teacher doesnt say anything. A lot of the times the teacher would make fun of the Latinos and asians. Which was pretty offensive. There was this one time this korean girl and she said "I'm going to read this korean song. I translated it into english so i can read it for you" And the teacher was like "Thank god, if it was in korean it would probably be like CHING CHONG CHONG!!" and the girl was like so surprised and just stood in front of the class like she didnt know what to do. and she was like "but...its not chinese..." lol. He also says crap about latinos and all that. But never says stuff about black people. But he does give referrals out and stuff but yeah...

i got off the topic and all. my point wasnt saying white people are racist. but yeah. from what i've seen black people talk a lot of trash about white people, but white people never say anything about them. i think in a way it relates to what people are talking about. Huh! Well, it's better for someone to know how they feel by expressing one self so maybe a person with different thoughts could change their views rather than someone bottling up hate towards people and never saying a thing, but you not knowing that they hate you is kind of unsettling, don't you think?

This reminds me of the word "Slavery". Slavery happened to all people. Asians, Whites, Blacks, EVERYBODY. Why? Slaves were mainly Prisoners of War. People that were thought to be weak physically and mentally. Whites back in the days of slavery would spout anything hateful to Blacks and they would just take it. But now, Blacks are much stronger physically and mentally and the tables have turned. Racism is in your face when the antagonist is stronger physically and mentally.

Something to think about.

Again I agree, but then you still have to admit the Japanese are not unique in this. Koreans also think they are the best, as do Chinese, and pretty well every country on the planet (Asian or otherwise). The thing the Japanese do have going for them though, is that they are the top in Asia in a lot of ways. Whether you like Japan or not, it's simply impossible to deny that Japan has been the only 'first world' country in Asia since WWII, and has the second most powerful economy on earth. That may not fit your criteria for being the 'top', but I'm just saying...

I don't think it's due to jealousy. Moreso due to history.

I just read Iris Chang's "Rape of Nanking" and it made me extremely depressed and sad. I can understand where all the hatred is coming from. I just think that it needs to be directed towards the correct parties, NOT the citizens of Japan.
