SEOUL, South Korea: South Korea said Monday it will push for the exploration of planets as early as 2017, an official said Monday, as Seoul seeks to join the exclusive space club.

South Korea will spend 3.8 trillion won (US$4 billion; €3 billion) over the next 10 years to secure technologies in building satellites and rockets, said Jeong Hae-yang, an official of the Science and Technology Ministry.

The space exploration is "an investment for the future," said Jeong, adding that the exploration will help resource-poor South Korea secure resources in space.

The ambitious project — made public at a hearing Monday — will be finalized in June, according to the ministry.

South Korea also plans to join international space exploration programs, including the international space station, to help master core technologies in building satellites and rockets, said Jeong.

Since 1992, South Korea has launched nine satellites, mostly for space and ocean observation and communications as well as military communications.

ambitious plans i look forward to.
we gotta thank the russians for allowing us to catch up.

They're broke and smart as hell. We should be thankful that they're broke, its not like we're getting something for free.
CJK
well, obviously. nothing's free, but russia has billion+ dollar debt with Korea that they want to minimize.

In a war of course you always want to take the higher ground. Space is the ultimate higher ground. Also, as article above and below says there are a lot of valuable resources in space and on the moon. Helium-3? Doesn't that make your voice go higher? lol jk.

Age of Space Divide
By Park Kyu-tae

As I travel over the earth I am under a hallucination as if I am an astronaut orbiting our great planet. Paying attention to the earth, it is as small as an atom in an ocean in comparison to the universe. For the most part, toxic contaminations and shortage of clean energies might ruin our living soil.

Over the course of history it has been man's greatest desire to hunt more, to take secure bigger lands, to desire the deep-sea, and to look to space. Certainly we forgot ``Enough is as good as a feast.''

Regarding a recent KAIST forum on the present and future of aerospace development in Korea, Dr. Paik Hong-yul, president of Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), gave a presentation and pointed out the progress in space programs and the success of multipurpose satellites, but currently Korea is in Group C, a satisfactory grade among the world's space programs. Nevertheless, Korea is aiming to rank within the top 10 countries in space technology in the 2000s.

Interestingly, Dr. Choi Kyu-hong, professor of astrodynamics at Yonsei University, revealed in the discussion that helium-3 is in great abundance on the moon accumulated by solar wind over billions of years, but it is rare on Earth as the atmosphere absorbs it all.

When helium-3 goes through a fusion reaction with deuterium oxide (heavy water), without radioactive contamination, it produces 18.4 MeV of clean energy. This is more or less the equivalent to a hydrogen bomb with the same mass.

Having plenty of heavy water on Earth if we could bring helium-3 over here then we might be able to resolve a long-cherished dream to develop environmentally friendly energy. Furthermore, the moon has evidence of water and we could construct a helium energy factory there and build an intermediate space station to refuel ships to dispatch to other satellites.

This is now not at all coincidental that the U.S., China, Japan and India are in fierce competition to explore the moon. We are familiar with the digital divide but soon there could be a space divide. In the course of nature, the ruler of space is the master of the world.

imo China Japan and Korea should cooperate on this.. there should be enough He-3 for three countries for 5,000 years.

No.
CJK
wow, an interesting comic that actually has a reference to little known ieodo.

i guess some koreans actually believe ieodo's an island when its actually not, yet china still claims this undersea reef as their own.
imo koreans should stay quiet on this growing issue. it doesnt belong to anyone, but as long as korea maintains its maritime laboratory and perhaps employs a military radar installation there in the future it will be priceless to korea. korea will have dokdo's military radar monitoring the east sea and ieodo monitoring the area's busy sea lanes between china, korea, japan, and taiwan.

back on topic:

He-3 sounds very interesting. Ive never heard of this material before.
And yes, it would be nice to see china, korea, and japan cooperate in space technology.

I doubt Japan will have any willing to cooperate in that area, and Korea will be less likely to cooperate with chinese since their technology is copied from Russia and for political reasons as well.

Keep dreaming. I doubt Korea would be cooperating with China on any matters concerning national security interests.
moobie
keep dreaming? haha, china has the funds and resources to do well on her own, but could use any help available so resources from space concentrate in asia and not europe/america.
SantaKlaws
Then China should do it alone. Cooperating with China on a strategic level is against Korea's national interests, and will not happen.
grunt
I totally agree with the above poster. Korea and China might share some common economic interests, but there won't be any cooperation between two countries in strategic level. (especially, high level technology)

Whats the point of space exploration? What are they going to do? Claim the best planet for future invasion?

Yeah, we soooooo need to set up a staging station on Mars as a rally point for our battlecruisers, colonize Venus as a resource platform, and fortify Luna and turn it into a Death Star, Darth Vader-style.

Why not? Every nation should get a planet of their own and stop fighting for once.

"Earth is the cradle of Mankind, but one cannot live forever in the cradle"
You got to start somewhere, sooner rather than later. The potential of space exploration is limitless.

Riiight... "Inventing" and innovating are not the same word. Go look it up in the dictionary before you try to pad your ego.

Great work China man! Bravo we envy you guys

So picking on some one smaller is Chinese way? After you guys never pay tax & contributed to your nation's space industry? Give me a break will you, get a life folks.

Just wait China man, Korea is right behind you guys, Korea will launch it's own rocket soon, seriously speaking when China did all by itself, what after Russian technology rescue?
Don't worry, Koreans are just as smart as other asians, we've got Russian & American technology also.

"Good Chinese brain" as in ripping apart Russian technology and claiming the entire thing as your own? That's nice to know.
