This is one of the new shows of the season, and I've been following it. Is pretty good and now that I watched the 8th episode I highly recommend it. If you haven't watched it you should. The animation is great the artistic style is to my liking. If you watch it and not hooked all the way, give it up to 8 episodes. I was hooked purely on the animation alone.

This thread will be where the show will be discussed since there isn't any other topics related to this.

Just wondering if anyone checked it out after I posted a thread about it?

Got the summary off wikipedia

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann takes place in a fictional far future where human beings have been forced underground and thrive in isolated subterranean civilizations. These "villages" have no contact with the surface world nor other villages. Since frequent earthquakes damage infrastructure, the villages must constantly expand deeper into the earth — individuals designated to this task are known as "diggers".

Jiiha Village is the home of Simon, a fourteen year old digger who was orphaned when his parents were killed in an earthquake. He is respected by the village elder as the best of the diggers, but is ostracized by his peers. After discovering a special drill key deep in the ground, he is recruited by an eccentric fellow orphan named Kamina into his group, the "Gurren Brigade". Kamina dreams of the surface world, which he visited as a child with his father but had to return home because he was too weak to survive.

After a failed attempt at reaching the surface, Kamina is jailed by the elder and Simon resumes digging, only to discover "a big face" deep in his tunnel. As he excitedly fetches Kamina to show him the discovery, he is caught by the village elder, but Kamina's punishment is interrupted by the ceiling of Jiiha Village collapsing as an enormous robot falls into the cavern. A fourteen year old girl named Yoko appears and tries to fight the robot with a large rifle, but initially cannot do much. Simon takes Kamina and Yoko to the "big face" he found earlier and discovers that the small drill key can be used to activate the small robot which he uses to end up destroying the much larger robot and effectively break through to the surface.

It is on the surface that Simon and Kamina discover that there are more large robots known as Gunmen piloted by "Beastmen" that terrorize the surface dwellers during the day. Simon and Kamina help Yoko and her village destroy three more Gunmen and Kamina takes one for himself, naming it Gurren. Eventually, Simon and Kamina decide that they will go on a journey to end the constant struggle between Beastmen and humans. Simon and Kamina are initially accompanied by Yoko and a mechanic from Yoko's village named Leeron as they head out to find the Beastmen's Human Eradication Army main head-quarters.

and here are some pics from the series.

This series is strangely addictive. I've watched it up to Episode 6, and have been holding up on it because I've been spoiled by someone. I'll wait 'till ep 12 or 13 and watch the thing in a row.

8 is freaking amazing!!
NINDOX
Anyone? I'm glad KJ is watching it, but has anyone gave it a gander?
NINDOX
I finally caught up with the series after I became impatient with the subbers I've been following and the series has concluded it's first major arc and all I have to say is if you haven't started now is not a bad time to begin.

Oh, did you watched anymore KJlost?
NINDOX
Nows the time to hop on the band wagon. There's only 2 more episode left, and I'm left wanting more!

I've seen upto episode 11 of Gurren-Lagann so far. In my opinion, it's probably the best anime I've seen this year (so far). Hopefully, I should hopefully catch up to the latest episodes over the next few days.

And I have to agree about episode 8. That episode was very gripping, and it really gave the series a darker tone. One thing I like about this anime are the memorable characters, as well as its revival of long forgotten elements from old-school mecha anime.
NINDOX
*tear* Finally, it has reach some one. These last couple of episodes will really put it above most anime. I mean they spent 40% of the entire budget solely on the last 4 episodes.
Jagger
Good thing you've created a thread to discuss the greatness of Gurren-Lagann!

I found episodes 8-11 very intense and gripping. I'll definately continue watching this anime as long as it can keep up the momentum for the rest of the series.
NINDOX
Everything is well pace. Except for 16 because is a recap, but still a very good recap.
cabbit
I've watched the first 13 episodes as they were subbed and have 14-25 sitting in a folder saved for a rainy day.

I've just seen upto episode 16. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better (especially without *you know who*), it just went and got even better. I think this anime is probably the most worthy candidate for best anime of the year, with a gripping storyline, memorable characters, and possibly the best mecha action I've seen.

I agree about episode 16 being a very good recap. Usually, I can't be bothered with recap episodes, but I actually enjoyed watching episode 16 very much, even though it's just a recap episode.

I'll probably watch the next arc in a few days time, when I have more time to watch it.

You should at least watch upto episode 15 (the end of the arc) before putting the series on hold.

Simon in my opinion has the best development in a character I've ever seen. This anime makes me want to shout at the top of my lungs too.

To be honest, I didn't really think much of Simon at the beginning. His personality was a bit uninteresting compared to Kamina, but now (as of episode 16), Simon's personality has developed quite a lot and he has become a lot more interesting. His character development is now one of my main reasons for watching the series. The character-driven nature of the storyline is what always keeps this anime interesting for me.

To be honest I wasn't looking forward to this anime when I first saw the previews. In the back of the mind I thought a little boy with a drill, how great of an idea that is? It looked nice so I checked it out.

I wouldn't have given this show a try if my aniki wasn't persistent enough to make me watch it. I'm glad I did though.

It is one of the best anime in my opinion, but you might not get into it from the beginning. You'll have to give it a while (at least 8 episodes) to get into it.

Just finished and I'm not disappointed at all.

I didn't like the first few episodes much either, but after watching the first 8 episodes, I was hooked... and Gurren-Lagann is now my favourite anime of the year!

So did anyone watch the ending yet?

I still haven't continued it yet after episode 16. I was waiting for some free time to watch all the remaining episodes in one go. Maybe tomorrow might be a good time?

Yup, I've finally finished the series. My opinion on Gurren-Lagann: it is one of the greatest and most epic masterpieces ever produced!

This anime has really raised the bar for mecha anime, and I doubt there'll ever be an anime as epic as Gurren-Lagann for years to come. In terms of its sheer epic scale, it has surpassed all previous anime, and hell, not even DBZ can compete with Gurren-Lagann's epic scale.

The other thing that stands out most for me is the character development. Simon's story of boy-becoming-man is one of the best I've yet seen. Although I just thought of him as a wimpy boy in the beginning, by the end of the series, he is just as badass as Kamina.

The only thing I was slightly dissapointed with was the epilogue after the credits (which I thought was a bit pointless), but other than that, I still consider Gurren-Lagann to be one of the best anime I've ever seen.
NINDOX
Yea, Gurren Lagann probably has one of the best plot for character development.

Indeed. But wasn't there anything you were dissapointed with?

By the way, check out this "300 Gurren-Lagann" trailer:

There were little things I was disappointed at, but nothings perfect, just the good parts really over shadowed the minor weaknesses of the show.

The only thing I was dissapointed with was the epilogue, but after reading that analysis, now I've started appreciating the epilogue more.

I feel like everything I watch and do is under rated (Even things I do that aren't related to anime or games). No wonder I'm not popular. =/

Gurren-Lagann isn't really underrated anymore. It's already been voted one of the highest-rated anime at AniDB and AnimeNewsNetwork.

But there are a lot of other anime/movies/games or hobbies/interests I like that just aren't popular with the crowd.

QUOTE
The new face of Britain? Flag poll results

By Matthew Moore

When Ian Lucas, a Welsh Labour MP, suggested the Union flag be redrawn to incorporate the Welsh dragon, he could not have imagined that this would be the "popular" choice.

Even at the height of Cool Britannia surely Tony Blair would have baulked at adopting this sunglasses-wearing, flame-haired cartoon dragon as our national emblem.

And to make matters worse it was designed not by a patriotic Briton, but a Norwegian.

But the internet has spoken. After Mr Lucas issued his appeal for new flag, the Telegraph was deluged with designs sent in by readers.

Some were serious, some scurrilous, some frankly ridiculous. Many came from Japan, where our competition sparked a national craze after it was picked up by a popular online forum.

We selected 20 of the best submissions and after a week-long online poll the sunglasses-dragon has emerged as the overwhelming favourite, with 55 per cent of the vote.

Even when we factor in questionable voting patterns (the winning design came from the back of the field with a surge of votes in the last few days) and the cynical wit of online readers, the choice seems a bizarre one.

The Norwegian designer, who wishes to remain anonymous, said he intended the flag to represent the union of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland in a modern, cool light.

The dragon itself was inspired by a Japanese anime television series.

"It represents shouting "UNION!" and joining together; kicking reason to the curb and doing the impossible; fighting the power, and piercing the heavens," he said

And what impact does he think the new flag would have on foreigners like himself?

"That the UK is awesome. I just hope they don't think it's a pirate flag.

"Actually, if this design is rejected as a common flag perhaps the Crown might file it for future use as a privateer ensign on the high seas or in outer space."

The influence of Japanese voters was also apparent in the runner-up design (above), which features a Manga cartoon character riding the traditional Welsh dragon. It tallied seven per cent of the votes.

The size of the dragon in relation to the tiny Union Jack may also have caught the eye of Welsh readers, who would have been less impressed with the third-place design (below), which earned six per cent of votes.

A flag showing St George slaying a Welsh dragon seems to jar with Mr Lucas's stated intention of illustrating Wales's "true place in the Union".

So has this whole exercise just been a bit of fun, or is there momentum behind the idea of a new Union flag?

Nine per cent of people in the online poll voted to keep the existing design, and most Telegraph readers who left comments were hostile to any suggestion of change.

Donald J Pedley summed up the mood of many readers who believe the Union Jack is both aesthetically pleasing and an effective national emblem.

"What an absurd idea. Has Great Britain nothing else to waste it's time on? The current flag is recognised and still respected around the world. It is still incorporated in flags of some Commonwealth countries."
