Have you faced discrimination from Vietnamese Americans who have stereotypes about you (that you're rich and from con ong chau cha family?)

I have met many sinh vien du hoc that are smarter than me.. and i'm damn impressed embarassedlaugh.gif

I read posts in hn-ams.org (Hanoi Amsterdam High) and a lot of them complained that while they never had been discriminated in the South, they faced A LOT of discrimination from Vietnamese Americans. IT's kind of ironic in a way

My distant cousin just arrive to our house to spend the next 5-10yrs studying here. And he doesn't feel discriminated or anything. It is however true that the majority of the sinh vien here are well connected including my cousin. His mother is the vice president of one of the leading textile company in Saigon, Vietnam. His mother sister is the wife of a vice deputy foreign minister base in the South, so you see that there is no problem getting money and visa to the United States. But, don't label him name because he is very hard working and intelligent. It cost three or four time as much for foreign student to study here than an American so all Foreign student must have a lot of money to stay and study here.

Even among immigrants, between those fled by boats and those newer immigrants icon_wink.gif and among oversea students those with scholarships and those have to pay. I think these incidents are considered to be very minor, not much of a concern. icon_smile.gif

can you elaborate, give examples, or give us a direct link to whay you mean "discriminate"? as in skinheads in Russia chasing down and beating foreign students or ppl here just giving them just a different look?

^ more like shun off people, stereotyping people as con ong chau cha having money all the time (stereotyping is a mild form of discrimination) etc.

I don't believe MOST of them are here on a scholarship!! laugh.gif there are not enough scholarships to going around for everyone! and then there are stories of officials giving their sons and daughters "scholarships" in their own agency like the Vietnam Airlines. You can go to VNEPress.net to check out those stories. Eventho I met some of them here going to school and working, I'm sure they are at least "middle class" or better in Vietnam. and then there are those come here to "play" and maybe study a little bit...... they are very rich!

There are alot of "Grandsons, grandnieces" of uncle Ho and grandparents and also many of them came here for school but they don't study well, most of them prefer stay in the US forever. Another group came here to looking for work in the nail shops or looking for husbands so they can be US citizen. Some of them claim to be students in the universities but in VN they event don't have highschool diploma or GED. They have money came support from their relatives in the US so they can get out of VN.
