I'm not too into the whole J-rock thing but I have heard music from all the artists and like some of them.
I only went to see Miyavi, D'espairsRay, Alice Nine, and an appearance from Yoshiki (he came out both nights) but overall it was pretty cool and a fun experience. Then there was another special guest who was Sugizo from Luna Sea and he rocked out with Miyavi.
One thing I hate about going to j-rock concerts in America are some of the fans that come with it.
It's basically the biggest gathering of Wapanese in the country and it's pretty scary to see people with these unhealthy obsessions with all things Japanese. The bands tend to sound better live than in their records though.

This is going to be an annual event so I'm planning on going to next year's too.

Also, they officially announced Miyavi as the 4th member of Yoshiki's new band 'SKIN' and they'll be making their debut at AnimeExpo one June 29th. I'm going to that one too icon_smile.gif

I saw some pretty weird stuff that day.

1. Fat ugly white girl wearing the 'nihon' headband with the rising sun in the middle.
2. White girl dressed in Kimono
3. Two friends giggling and debating whether the Japanese man with the camera works for NHK or tv-asahi.
4. The 'Holier-than-thou' group who thinks they're the best because they went to Japan
5. White girl who brags she bought her wooden slippers from 'Nagoya' and her kimino from 'Kyoto'

It's soooooooooooooooooo eerie.
sonny_angel
^ ya I feel so out of place...it leaves me speechless and thinking in my head "are they serious?!" lol laugh.gif

Almost makes me glad I didn't go... embarassedlaugh.gif But they're really making this an annual event?
Aiwo
Oh, sweet, next year I'll check it out. Wish they'd come to the UK, that'd be a lot cheaper.

I'm pretty new with this Jrockscene, one of my best friends let me hear some MUCC, L'Arc and others, they're pretty interesting. I'm so bored with most of the American and British/ English-language entertainment. Most fans I've asked said Jrock has a distinctive, original sound. Hmm, well, I need to hear more songs before I make conclusion myself. But their lyrics are a lot more ehm poetic than most American ones. And there are like subgenres of rock, like visual kei, which is not really my thing.

1. I've seen non-J people wearing bags, shirts, jackets with the japanese flag/red sun on them, in school or on street. I don't blame them, if you only look at the 'design', it's pretty nice, but it has negative connotations for some people.
2. How is that weird? I've seen non-Indian people dress in sari and Chinese/Taiwanese dress in kimono and so on. It's a sign of admiration. But it may also be just fun to dress up like that, it attracts attention. And at that con, only positive. I myself have worn Thai attire, I loved it.
3. How is that worth mentioning? I meet childish people everywhere.
4. That IS weird. My friend calls them the 'elitists', people who find themselves better fans, cause they went to their concerts/ to Japan. What a fu-ktards.
5. That is rather funny, she is still a fu-ktard, sorta.

Adee
^There're not too different to western rock music imo, but you do get a few J-rock bands that are exceptional.
Saint Legends
^I agree, especially concerning the more mainstream bands.

That's kinda where most of the "distinctive, original sound" comes from. embarassedlaugh.gif If you can just get past the "visual" aspects of the bands you'll find that some of them have quite a lot to offer, such as Kagrra, Dir en grey (earlier work) or Gazette (earlier work).

Some of their Metal acts are pretty good too, like X-Japan and Sex Machineguns.

yeah even more annoying are eastern asians screaming for white actors/actresses, coveting for western designer goods, all these whitewashed asian americans cutting ties with their culture, asian women dating white guys, etc. thhe irony is that 'jrocks' earliest influences were westerners; it was their admiration of western rock music that motivated them to create their own genre. so why cant white people be into japenese stuff wqhen japanese people are into white stuff?
yonsama
I never said they couldn't
I just pointed out the weird things I saw that day.
Aiwo
But the majority of ''weird'' thing you saw, isn't exactly weird, unless you have a small view on things.

I dunno, the visuals in visual kei turns me off, I'm not used seeing rockers looking *coughgirlyscough* androgynous and spectaculair, but having the most deepest, masculine voices I've ever heard. It's growing slowly on me.
Who cares, if the music is gooooood. There are jrockers who don't wear fancy attires and make-up and who effing rock, right? Asian Kung Fu Generation, Remioromen, B'z, Plastic Tree etc. Haven't heard them all yet, heh.

Oh, and Saint Legends, thanks for the links! Love the energy/crazyness they give out, but I'm not such a metalrock-girl (yet). And that PV Subete, that was so awesome and funky with all the arts-references in it.

I've been listening to Dir en Grey's embryo, it's so beautiful and emotional, and the lyrics are disturbing and unexpected.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAAzAyiYh8E

I heard they have been touring with Korn, which is a major band in the US.

MUCC - Libra madcool.gif
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YukqyRrPZE

Gackt - Doomsday madcool.gif impressive performance
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnG_kBRxrqo

L'Arc en Ciel - Hitmoi no Jyuunin madcool.gif aaaah beautiful, impressive voice
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XPPs-v3vOk

I heard they are the #1 band of Japan or even Asia?

It's kind of obvious I like the mellower rock with good melodies more.

yonsama
Wait, wait... so are you telling me it's not weird for a Japanese to wear what the Americans/Europeans wore back in the 1700's to let's say... a Fall Out Boy concert?

Are you saying it's not weird for a Jewish girl to wear a Nazi armband?

Are you saying it's not weird whether a group of Japanese girls in their country debate whether the American tourist with the video camera works for maybe NBC or FOX? "Oh he's clearly from FOX just look at him" "Oh no... he's from NBC I bet you anything he is" "We should go ask him"

Are you saying it's not weird for a Japanese to talk down all other Japanese because she has been to America and they have not?

We all have different views and opinions. And it just so happens that I think you're an idiot laugh.gif
Adee
^no need to call him out it's just lil' misunderstanding.

Visual Kei was influenced by Western glam rock, so it's not too different to the likes 80's metal and punk or even emo and goths.
