Well, it's the talk of the town... Japan won this year's Miss Universe pageant.

But...there seems to be quite a number of controversies resulted from this winning...

Some Japanese articles have mentioned about Kurara Chibana (Miss Japan 2006)'s status in Japan being threatened by Riyo Mori (Miss Japan 2007).

Some prefer Kurara to Riyo because the former has more charm, elegance and (quite obviously) beauty. (Check Japan Today's website at http://www.japantoday.com/jp/popvox/737).

If your opinion is being asked as to whom do you prefer, which Miss Japan will you pick? And why?

Kurara Chibana + Riyo Mori

Riyo Mori

Kurara Chibana

My personal opinion is Kurara deserved the title in 2006 and riyo deserves it in 2007.

I concur, they look like they could be twins! Neither are that beautiful to me. Attractive? Yes. Beautiful? No.

Lolz, ich thought the same, too. ^^

Does this matters anymore? It's OVER for godsake. I bet you made the same thread at s o o m pi too.

And besides, Kurara was in 2006 and Riyo is in 2007. The only similarity between them is that they are from Japan.

I liked Riyo's national costume more than Kurara's. I mean, Japan has the prettiest traditional dresses out of all countries, the kimono. Why the hell would you screw with that?

The following are photos of her in Kyoto for a FENDI FASHION SHOW, which took place on 23rd & 24th June 2007.

She had a busy schedule as written on her official personal blog, and here it goes:

On Friday, she had gone to Kyoto for the fashion show's rehearsal, and she stayed in Kyoto for 3 and a half hours. After that she went back to Tokyo for the live TV recording of her news report segment @ News Zero, which began around 11 p.m. that night.

After the live TV recording, she went back to Kyoto, which is a 5-hr drive away from Tokyo, and reached the city at around 6.30 a.m. She prepared her segment for the fashion show, which began in the afernoon that day.

The photos below are of her with her fashion show co-workers, and her wanderings in Kyoto either on Sunday or Monday. Enjoy!

This photo really cracked me up big time. It goes to show Kurara's appreciation of "quirky humour"...

Hi does anyone know where to have access to Kurara Chibana's interview video which was available at the Miss Universe 2006 website?

It was replaced by Riyo Mori's video now, and the website is truly screwed-up. The links pointed to the wrong videos... Costume video was still Kurara's, but the others are replaced I think.

Does anybody by any chance have a copy of Kurara Chibana's interview video, or know a link to it?

Please enlighten me here! Thank you so much!

Yeah, it seems like I'm not the only one to think Riyo Mori has the luck...

Kurara Chibana practically paved the road for Riyo Mori. If their turns are reversed, Kurara Chibana might definitely win this year. But once again, it's the LUCK factor.

More information about Kurara Chibana that I know from my lousy Japanese translation.
(Source:Kurara Chibana's recording transcript at Japanese radio station J-WAVE.)

When Kurara Chibana was 18, she failed her University Entrance exams. And she was depressed and sad about it. She had two options. That is to go overseas (to study or travel)(her parents are bankers) OR be jobless and self-study for a year and re-take the University Entrance exams. She was unsure of what to do and her teacher wrote a letter to her citing the following words as a form of encouragement:

THE SERENITY PRAYER
O God, give us
serenity to accept what cannot be changed,
courage to change what should be changed,
and wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.

Source: Taken from Kurara Chibana's Blog.

In the end she chose to re-take the exams and she passed successfully and got into Sophia University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Educational Philosophy. Since then, this SERENITY PRAYER has been her favourite phrase, and a source of support.

From here, I personally could see Kurara Chibana has great determination in whatever she does, and even though she may have suffered some obstacles and failures along the way, she is still strong and go forward with her dreams and goals. So even if Kurara Chibana didn't win the Miss Universe title last year, I'm pretty sure she's still a strong-minded woman who is willing to grit her teeth and take on whatever challenges in her stride.

I just hope that she will have greater LUCK in whatever she does in the future. Because a little luck can still possibly make a bigger difference than what strong determination can do. So God, I pray you can grant her more luck now and in the future.

Kurara Chibana @ J-WAVE recording session on 24th June 2007 (she does a recording on every last Sunday of the month if I am not wrong)

Actually, I think Riyo looks better then Kurara. Kurara's face looks skeletal.

More photos of Kurara Chibana!

I like her in this black gown. She was at the premiere of THE GUARDIAN @ Seattle, Washington last year I guess.

The following are of her performance segment in this year's Miss Universe Japan 2007 final. She's portraying a Bond girl, and she danced flamenco that evening too! I love her dancing gestures, very sensual.

Till next time.
