Hi,

Chinese have a lot of dialects and all of them sound different.

Do Japanese have dialects as well?

Thanks

Just a curious guy..

Yup, man. But there's confusion between "dialect" and "accent". They interchange the definition a lot. Like Osaka-ben (kansai dialect), is one prime example. A lot of Japanese can't understand a word of that dialect.

I can only distinguish between the standard Tokyo dialect and the Osaka dialect.

I see... Thanks for the information...

well in anime, I guess some of the comedic characters speak Osaka ben.
South Park is dubbed with the osaka dialect in the Japanese version
My friends usually tell me that Tokyo people tend to make fun of Osaka-ben as well but I'm not sure to what extent.
Most of the Japanese comedians come from Osaka so if you want to know how it sounds like, just hear them speak.

A friend of mine lived in Osaka for awhile and he said the water was really bad laugh.gif

There's so many dialects in Japan. Don't think it's just Osaka-ben and Hyojungo. Just, those are the most common ones. For example, the Fukui-ben, just north of Osaka sounds very different from Osaka-ben. Same area. Best example of someone who uses this accent is Takahashi Ai, at least in the media. Then you go further south, Okinawa's dialect isn't even considered a dialect but a language on its own. It's very similar to China and their dialects, there's many of them.

Ya, yonsama is right though, usually osaka-ben is used as comic relief, as do most comedians come out of the Kansai area.
