Indian navy to acquire 6 new submarines, 33 ships

2007-06-30 10:30 PM

India's navy will acquire six new submarines and 33 ships, the top admiral said Saturday, a day after India decided to invite bids for combat jets to upgrade its air force's capability.

"Our interest is not restricted to the Indian Ocean," Adm. Sureesh Mehta told reporters in the eastern city of Calcutta. He did not elaborate, but said "we need a vibrant navy" to safeguard India's economic interests.

India has 7,516 kilometers (4,670 miles) of coastline.

Mehta said it would take about six years for the navy to acquire the six new submarines and 33 ships. It currently has 126 ships and 16 submarines, some of which are aging.

India has been seeking to bolster its rise as an economic power by reshaping its armed forces into a modern military capable of projecting power well beyond its shores.

The Defense Ministry said Friday that it was inviting bids from international aircraft makers for 126 combat jets to upgrade its air force's capability at an estimated cost of 420 billion rupees (US$10 billion.)

Most of the Indian Military hardware is not American. This time as well there is very remote possibility that American hardware would be purchased. May be 1 or 2 purchases could be made from USA.

Indians love to buy hardwares from foreign sources. Domestic products are sub-standard or non-usable.

Same goes with China. Indians develop their own things with honesty they don't go around stealing the information like the Chinese do.

Don't think Indians make anything except for buying alot from the russians. Not saying China is stealing but I think stealing is an art, not everybody can master that.

Stealing is stealing, it means that even if they(Chinese) make something it is not theirs it is stolen. Yes Indians buy a lot from Russians then what about China? DO Chinese buy from USA or the Japanese? embarassedlaugh.gif For your information a lot of military hardware is Indian as well. Indians have built their own helicopters they are already in the service in defense forces, and also other countries are interested in buying them. They have started making their own aircraft-career. After its completion India will have three aircraft-careers in its fleet.
