The ao dai worn by vietnamese women are IMO some of the most beautiful and yet simple piece of clothing ever conceived by the human mind. And I'm not saying this because I'm a vietnamese either. Those western dresses don't even compare. I just love a girl in an ao dai. Unfortunately, most young viet females in the US shy away from these except on special occasion, like Tet!.
BTW, I also think the traditional clothes that Indian girls wear are very elegant too.
Ek-ke, what the heck is southeast asia? are you ashamed of where you're from or something?

No, I am not ashamed I am from the Philippines how about you Mr.ManlyMan?

I also think the Thai dress that I see the women wear in traditional dances are very unique. Love Bali customes too. Hmm, asian is a very diverse word. But in general, I like all "southeast asians" cultures. These would probably include Vietnam, Lao, Thai, Cambodia, Philipines, Indonesia, and perhaps Malaysia and Singapore. IMO, southeast asians tend to be more easy going than our northern cousins, the chinese, koreans, and japanese. Seems that the further you go south, the more relaxed people get.
I'm viet. You Philippine Ek, I see. I'd like to visit your home country someday! Philipino women are easy going people, I find. Say, you have relatives back home?

Easy Going ? In what aspect of life?I think they could carry it quite well even if they have problems. Our national costume for women is the Baro't saya and for men its the Barong tagalog. But if you are familiar with the Philippine terno, the one popularized by Mrs.Imelda with butterful sleves ,it is heavily influenced by the west.Yes, they are all over the world! I have in west coast of the US, east coast , Mexico, Canada,China,HK,Taiwan, Europe.

My husband insisted that I had a couple of these ao dai made here and in Vietnam and boy, the wrinkles around your arms feel funny indeed. If you are in any way fat or flabby, it shows badly because it is skin tight.
It boggles my mind that these girls in Vietnam do not get their ao dai white uniform entangled on the bicycles. But they do get around. And they have the rains so often. Must be a lot of laundry too.
I prefer my Chinese Cheung Sam anytime.

That's not completely true.
Yes, historically, Northerners in China is considered to be more rigid, straight-forward, and make good government officials while Southerners tend to be clever, sly, and good at business. But nowadays, everyone's pretty much mixed and the whole Chinese society is more uniformed and not nearly as separated.
I believe Northerners in Asia tend to be more rigid and straight-forward while Southerners seem more "relaxed" and "easy going" because of the difference in weather.

Oh no, don't get me wrong, I think the ao dai is beautiful. I just thought it would be too hot and humid in Vietnam to wear anything more than a t-shirt and pair of shorts.
Well, I couldn't afford the rent anymore so I had to give up my igloo.

hey you know what's interesting though -- seeing a western chick (girl) wear Ao Dai. it's pretty interesting. I convinced a couple of my lady friends to wear them, just like for a night out on the town and they looked pretty good. If you have long-long legs even better; but then you might have to get them custom made for yah cause most Vietnamese women are shorter right?

I've worn Ao Dai before mostly for some sort of fashion show. My only complaint is that you need boobs to fill out the dress, and when you lack in that department, it looks kinda big on you, lol. It's pretty comfortable to wear, and the pants feel really nice cause they're wide leg, and it feels like you're wearing a skirt. Also they make your legs look longer ^_^

i got an ao dai made when i was in Vietnam beginning of last year. THe bad thing with ao dais is that they are usually custom made so if you gain a bit of weight you cant fit then anymore haahhaha
I've only worn mine like twice to like the Tet Festival over here but yeh some reason it attracts quite a lot of attention >.<...i think its really pretty but it does get quite annoying cos its like quite restraining like in the top part of the dress (or maybe I'm just fatter lol)
There are quite a few modern ai dais out there too..1 of my friends is an aspiring designer and his made some really nice ai dais which dont have the sleeves and stuff o_O
