Direct Download Sites
Some websites are kind enough to spend hundreds of dollars for hosting anime on their servers. You can download anime directly from their servers without much hassle (some may require a simple forum registration though). Download speeds are decent although they are often late at updating their anime files by a day or three upon the release of a subbed anime.

Streaming Video
When you want to watch anime, but is too lazy to download, you can watch them on video streaming sites. Just search for any anime in their search engine. You can watch your animes right away, but you will sacrifice video quality, althought Stage6 is an exception as it does host high quality videos.

Rapidshare/Megaupload/Mediafire/etc.
- Go to Google.com and type in the name of an anime and the name of a file hosting site like Rapidshare. For example 'bleach megaupload' will find links to Bleach episodes hosted on Megaupload.
- Google will then give you results that contain download links to the anime. These are usually posted on discussions forums like this or on blogs.
- The downside to this method is that you may encounter a lot of deadlinks. And the host sites can impose download restrictions you.
- You can also use Google's blog search instead http://blogsearch.google.com/
BitTorrent is a method of file sharing in which you are uploading parts of a file that you've downloaded to other peers, while you receive a share of what others have downloaded at the same time (theoretically). It is peer2peer, the file is not hosted on servers, but on yours and others computers. Download speeds can be very fast, but if you do not have your router ports set up right then it is nearly useless.
To use torrents, you need a BitTorrent client and a torrent file. Torrents are very small files that tell your bittorrent client where to connect to (a tracker) for downloading a certain file like anime videos or free software.
Peers with complete files are called seeds, they are the lifeline of a torrent because they help keep distribution of the file going. If there are zero seeds, then the torrent is dead and useless. And leechers are peers who do not have completed files. This method is not recommended for everyone as it can slow down your internet connection.

IRC
Often subbing groups will have have an IRC chatroom where you can directly download anime from a server through XDCC bots. The download speeds are pretty good, although they won't be higher than some torrents speeds, they are consistent. So that means you will probably finish downloading your files (like 20~30 minutes) faster than most torrents.
You will need an IRC client like mIRC, or you can get the IRC add-on for Firefox called ChatZilla.

So, sometimes on anime you are watching, you will find the name of the group. And just pop that into a search engine and maybe you can find their website and their IRC channel. Not all groups have IRC channels.
Let's use Eclipse (http://eclipse.no-sekai.de/) for an example. They do some awesome subs. Well, lets go to their IRC channel then which is #eclipse @ irc.rizon.net.
To go in the rizon network, type in /server irc.rizon.net and then type in /join #eclipse to get into Eclipse's channel. There will be a link in the channel (usually at the top) that leads you to an XDCC list. And this list is a list of files that you can download from the server. http://eclipse.no-sekai.de/xdcc The command line to retrieve a file is a little bit different in every room. For Eclipse, you wil have to type in "/msg eclipse|ichigo xdcc get #331" for example and the # is the number of the file. After entering that, your client will ask you where you want to save the file and it will start to download.
CODECS
If you haven't done so already, you will need to download some codecs to watch the anime you've downloaded.
