I had a discussion about this topic over here http://www.topix.net/forum/religion/...V7R9AOEQ4DJATK. Bollywood makes fun of not only Punjabi Sikhs in general but also Gujarati's, Nepalis, Pakistanis, and South Indians (especially those involved in bharat natiyam etc ). And it wont stop until we let em hear it.

You could have said"Bollywood makes fun of Sikhs"in the title

Bollywood doesn't make fun of Hindu Punjabis.

NRIs are also stereotyped.

Didn't a well-known Bollywood actor make an anti-Nepal comment a few years ago? From what I've heard, that event subsequently led to a mass boycott of Bollywood films in Nepal, and resulted in an unprecedented rise in popularity of locally produced films in Nepal.

It would be Hrithik Roshan.

Sardar is the only jokes I see ever being used in hindi movies. Though I dont watch many anymore since due to a lack of indians around here.

Let's not forget Rimi Sen's comment about "The director can even make a black african look pretty" icon_rolleyes.gif embarassedlaugh.gif

He made a comment about Chinese people that's considered offensive as well from what I remember.

There were apparently some rumours back then about Hritik Roshan bad-mouthing Nepal, but he denied these rumours. Four people were killed during a protest reacting to these rumours. There was never any evidence of these allegations, so I think it might have just been someone's bad idea of a joke (or maybe even intentionally trying to cause tensions between India and Nepal).

There was a more recent incident of anti-Hazara comments in Kabul Express. The movie was banned in Afghanistan because of it. Incidentally, the director of the movie was a Pathan (a descendant of Pashtuns, who have historically had tensions with the Hazara).

The incident had nothing to do with China. Either way, why should a Nepalese person be offended over an anti-Chinese comment in the first place?

I don't get the picking up on conflicts that your ancestors had. If you're gonna make some offesive $hit then do it because you have a grudge against a type of people for something they did to you, not because your great grandfather didn't like their food.

As for the stereotyping, everyone does it shrug.gif Hollywood also stereotypes a lot, but all you can do is take it in with a pinch of salt and some humour.

Why does Bollywood Makes fun of the Minority?

India has no majority ethnic group. Every ethnic group in India is a minority.

Are you talking about the Pashtun-Hazara thing?

Bollywood loves to stereotype Pakis especially.

EDIT:

Speaking of Nepalis, here's a typical Indian stereotype of Nepali Gurkhas in a Coca-Cola ad with Aamir Khan:

Yeah I was talking about the Hazara thing. Like you said with the director being Pathan and all.

But Bollywood stereotypes everyone, not only Pakis.

I meant in a negative way. So many Bollywood movies always make Pakistanis the bad guys (and many Pakis still continue to watch Bollywood movies even though).

bollywood also stereotypes all indians born and/or raised in america to be spoiled brats, with no respect for their parents, and a total disregard for indian culture and traditions.

not a racial stereotype, but a stupid stereotype, none the less.

I'd like to know what the Indian media stereotypes American residents. Do they even stereotype Filipinos too?

That's actually kind of Ironic because around where I live desi's generally try to hold onto their culture for fear of losing it.

They portray white girls as being very easy, overly flirtatious...yet sexy and fun at the same time. At least from what I know.

Desis in the West are more traditional in many ways because their parents came in the 70's and 80's, and passed on the same mentality to their kids.

Desis in India know what's going on currently in India and wouldn't be stuck in the 70's and 80's, so naturally they wouldn't be as conservative.

No, I don't think Filipinos are even mentioned in movies or even among Indians and other desis.

BTW, aren't Indians stereotyped in the Phillipines?

yea. they don't appear often in filipino movies, but when they do, they have funny accents. embarassedlaugh.gif sadly, they're generally there just for comic relief, kind of like how homosexuals are portrayed in hollywood.

In 2006, at the London press conference for his film Krrish, Roshan said that he knew it was time to leave Shanghai and Hong Kong after six weeks of stunt training and go home when his eyes started "turning into little slits like the Chinese".[16]

No idea about how Indian media portrays American residents. Majority of Indians have no idea about Philippines so no way of stereotyping them.

Hmmm bad stereotyping. Why they call Indians as Bumbay may I know please?

Yes I have to agree on that. In India most people move ahead with times but Indians living abroad are holding on to the same values and thinking of the times when they left India. But there are all types of people in India some are too conservative some very liberal and some somewhere in between. Of what I have observed most 2nd generation Indians in foreign countries are either too liberal or too conservative.

Filipinos don't stereotype Indians and in fact they like Indians more than East Asians.

I've had great experiences with Indians from India, even though I know people can vary from liberal to conservative. But my impression is that more Indians from India just want to enjoy life as it is and don't really care about how "traditional" or "Indianized" you are. biggthumpup.gif
