Filipino Male Average height is 5' 4"
Filipino Female Average height is 5' 2"

I think I don't believe that because, Filipino young men (like me) and women have been growing year by year.

Here's the article:

Source:

http://emeritus.blogspot.com/2007/07/talle...e-in-world.html

While I was browsing the latest issue (July 30) of TIME magazine yesterday, I saw this interesting page which featured the new list of tallest people in the world:

TIME, being an American magazine, (as well as the rest of related online sources I found) lamented the fact that Americans no longer stand the tallest as before. These days, the height contest is mightily ruled by the Europeans --- the Dutch in particular, who stand at an average height of 182.9 centimeters, or 6 feet and 2 inches. The Norwegians and the Germans lag slightly behind by having the average height of 5 feet and 11 inches, or an inch shy of a 6-footer. The once proud Americans now have an average height of 5 feet and 10 inches.

How about us Filipinos? In the race for height, we are one of the shortest among the tallest by having an average height of 5 feet and 4 inches.

What's the fuss about height and being tall? Should there be any concern at all?

How tall one grows is determined by his genes and the environment he grew up in. More emphasis is given on the environment, and in this case, the countries we live in. The common logic employed is that the richer the country is, the better it can provide nutrition to its young, and therefore, hope they can become "taller people" in the future.

Various research studies have suggested that on average, taller people are "healthier, wealthier, live longer, and may even be more intelligent than shorter people." Short people will surely criticize the statement of course, but when all is said and done, their cases will prove to be more of the exception than the prevailing observed trend.

Why then are the Dutch the tallest people nowadays?

Komlos and Lauderdale in their current and noteworthy paper on the subject said:

It is by no means obvious what combination of factors has led the Dutch to be taller than the population of the surrounding countries with similar extensive social safety nets. In addition to an excellent medical system and many social services, the Dutch anthropometric advantage also might be based on the lower labor force participation rates of females, which has enabled mothers to provide a more propitious environment for newborns than those prevailing in day-care centers.

In addition, starting with the beginning of the 20th century the expanding welfare state supported Dutch mothers from all social classes to participate in a public health monitoring system. The so-called consultatiebureaus played a key role, especially after World War II. Mothers could obtain advice about infant-feeding, child nutrition and hygiene from a paediatrician; assessment of the health status of the children was part of the routine (de Beer, 2004). The extensive character of this system is unique in the Netherlands.

A more caring government which knows how to spend its rich resources can therefore hope to see its young people grow taller and taller. Alas, here in the Philippines, we seem to have a deficiency of both (resources and political will), and with an expanding population growth, I think it will take longer before we can become six-footers.

I'm 5'7, and so far it's because I was born and raised in America. However my mom is only 5'0" and my dad is only 5'6", so far I'm now the biggest in my family.

I was born in the Philippines, but until when I was 12 yrs. old I lived in the US. Now, I am 13 and I am 5' 3 1/2".

Is 5' 3 1/2" already tall for a 13 yr. old male like me? :Curious:

^What about most Supermodels???? They aren't that smart. Look at Janice d!ckenson or even Paris Hilton!

My opinion of different Asian Ethnic groups based on the order from tallest to shortest are as follows (I'm only including East and Southeast Asians):

1) Koreans
2) Japanese
3) Northern Chinese
4) Lao people/Burmese people
5) Khmer people
6) Southern Chinese
7) Thai
8) Vietnamese
9) Indonesians/Malaysians (non mixed with Indian or Chinese)
10) Filipinos
11) Hmong

Thai people here tend to be really tall...
im 6'3 though only half filipino but mom is still only 5'2 and dad is 5'5...

i think its nutrition that dont allow filipinos in the philippines to reach full potential... the tallest in asia are typically the the richest.
north koreans are on average 0.3 feet shorter than south koreans... nutritition.

Possible REASONS why Filipino are not so Tall? (Awws? We ranked Top 7 as the tallest people in the World)

Here's the info taken from: (If u are not convinced that Filipinos are the SHORTEST of THE TALLEST People in World look it here):

http://emeritus.blogspot.com/2007/07/talle...e-in-world.html

You forgot, lack of natural resources. Besides I bet Africans are pretty much shorter than Filipinos.
sbeechan
Pretty short but not as short as Hmong people.
NitrousOxide
were too short altho some of us reach 7feet... most would be just around 5-6feet
jootellnolie
Don't forget it's also with Genetics too because sometimes the environmental food changes doesn't affect some people. I think the reason Hmongs, genetically are the shortest because they're built for high altitude terrains. If you look at the natives in South America who live in the mountains for many generations they're really short.

I don't know about Filipino cases though???? From what I can tell most Filipinos are small frame to begin with, like small bones. The Laotians and Khmers live in an even poorer country than Filipinos yet genetically they are taller. Maybe perhaps mainland Southeast Asia is a lot more different than the islands.

I also tend to noctice that a lot of Laotians (particularly the Northern ones) are very broad shouldered and very long and lean, but a lot of them are big boned too. The average height for a lot of Laotian girls that I see is about 5'4 to 5'5 but in America it seems like they're more like 5'6 to 5'7, same for Cambodians.

The only Thais that were tall that I ever encountered were the ones mixed with Cambodians or Laotians, but I would have assumed the ones mixed with Chinese would have been tall too but maybe not because most Chinese in Thailand are Ethnic Southern Chinese.

EyEsTrAiN
The last time I was in the Philippines, I saw a lot of Filipinos that were around 5'7 to 6'0+.
sweet misery
it has something to do with genetics and proper nutrition
my mom is 5'4 and my dad is 5'8
and im 5'6 so im in d middle hehehe
NitrousOxide
its in the food too as my mom wud say... hahahaha

I saw a decent amount too earlier this year but the clear majority are shorties :P I'm 6'3 and the only people I saw taller than myself were bballers.

I think jootellnolie is on the right track, flips have evolved how they are due to their environment and conditions.

I'd have to agree with you because I was born in Northern Laos and I'm 5'10" with broad shoulders, but if I had been born in the U.S., I probably would've been taller because I know Laotian guys who are 6' feet and up and Laotian women who are 5'8" and up.

Stereotypically speaking, Laotians tend to be more pure than Thais, so on average, Laotian people are taller than Thais. In the states, Cambodians and Laotians tend to be around the same height.

Remember, if you're mixed with another race (white, black) than it's really not a fair comparison. You have to be almost purely Asian in order to be fair... =)

I got measured recently, i’m 178cm tall – which if I’m not mistaken is 5’8 or 5’9? (correct me if I’m wrong). My uncle in Zamboanga is 6’2 and my male cousins there are around 5’10 to 6ft. My female cousin is around 5’6. So where do you draw the line when ‘apparently’ Filipinos are short?

You know PUBERTY, Girls are growing in height but it doesn't last too long (I think girls that enters GROWTH SPURT tend to grow around 11-13 then 14-16 for boys) <<<<-------- But I think every boy and girl doesn't stop growing until 21. 11-13 (for girls) and 14-16 (for boys) are the PEAKS or the FASTEST period but it also depends on what you EAT. beerchug.gif

I find that the ideal height for guys is around 5'9 to 6'1

For girls it's 5'3 to 5'7

I do find a lot of petite women to be very sexy but I think about the children we might have and I don't want them to end up short
