Well a lot of white ppl call themselves Irish-American, Italian-American, German-American, etc. The reason why ppl don't call African Americans by their specific ethnicity is because it's mostly unknown & varies.

For some reason that's kind of offensive to White people. I tried telling some white folks at my school that and they got offended. I'm like WTF?!

Be we distinguish here between African and black. I hate it when people say "african american" to refer to black Americans. That's like me calling myself Spanish-American.

Like that's going make any difference whether it's traced back to Africa or not... Evolution is the key to success.
Ever thought about why the mini giraffes died while the really long necked ones survived ? go do your research upon the evolution of species if you have no idea what I'm talking about.

people from the north african countries are considered "white" by the US census, but technically they are african american
I try to avoid labeling people unless when I'm typing in a topic like this.
Anyway, when I was in college, we were talking about racism. This guy said that he didn't like to be called black. He said that he preferred African-American. But judging from this thread, I understand how people wouldn't want to be called African-American. It's better to avoid labeling altogether. Even if you don't mean it, the other person might not like it.
