this something i just came to learn and very proud of learning it as a new building was finished here in San Francisco http://www.bayanihancc.org/.
the word "Bayanihan" has it changed? have it deteriorated? or is it in danger our tradition vanishing? or is it gone already?
let's face it... the world is not so simple anymore. has
due to the hardships in life, we have to look at our own interest now. how is bayanihan still being practiced.
the concept of bayanihan should also socially evolve to help our country's best interest instead of "by lift a fellow mates home and moving it"...it should be more than just that. come on who's with me to promote this! biggthumpup.gif

i guess so!

IT SHOULD START HERE!

this tradition that is vanishing is should be the (our) foundation of our nationalism and nation!

all this leads to colonial mentality...that gave birth to crab mentality and ‘pakikisama’ mentality which is utterly disgusting!

If you hate Colonial cultures/languages so much then stop speaking English. English is a Philippine colonial language you know.

Oh my...

English might not be what we made then should we reject electricity too? Then next cars? Then what computers? Because all of these were made from another country..

Honestly, I want English as the national language because it is beneficial especially in business and in international relations.
Another is, the language we call FIlipino is just another term for Tagalog which is really unfair to all the other ethnicities in the country. How come it was tagalog in the first place? Talktohand.gif

English is alot better than Filipino and that's why we have a good competitive edge over our neighbors because of our skills in English.

Let's go back to topic:

Bayanihan is still present and very well alive. It's not just about carrying houses, which is still existent (people in the province carried someone else's house when the new airport got built), but its about helping others. If you live in the country, the answer would be pretty obvious. beerchug.gif

I think if the early filipinos had bayanihan in mind we would have few languages,no tagalog,no cebuano just old languages like ilocano, pampangueno, mangyan, manobo etch.

Here we AGAIN encounter the Westerners’ barbaric deeds. ‘Nuff said. But I’d like for you to focus your attention on what the adjacent islands did for that city that had been thrown into famine: they “quickly relieved the need, thanks to the abundance they enjoyed.” First we see one of our best qualities in action here: bayanihan. Second, we note the reason why the foreigners ravaged the city: it was rich. That is why we have been colonized by one country after another.

i see that there's been a few discussion about bayanihan but no proper definition on the word has been made yet. so here's my contribution to this thread (actually, i originally had it in my own thread which *promo says he already had, which is this thread):

Bayanihan Defined.

Bayanihan is a cultural trait of the Filipino people which means making one another a hero. This is the exact opposite of crab mentality.

Classic Example of Bayanihan.

Taj Mahal of India. Great Wall of China. Great Pyramids of Egypt. These are just some of the Man-Made Wonders of the World. Generally, these wonders were made for kings/ pharaohs/ emperors through forced or slave labor. Definitely NOT bayanihan.

Ever been to the Banaue Rice Terraces? You’ll stand in awe watching this marvelous creation of the Ifugao tribe. Not just an ancient engineering marvel, as recognized by the American Society of Civil Engineers, to quote:

'Dating from 100 BC, this is the oldest and most extensive use of terraces in the world. The 20,000 hectares of terraces represent a rearrangement of the Cordillera Mountain Range from bedrock to topsoil. The engineering principles of hydrology, sustainable development, and efficient use of water resources and irrigation are all embodied in the careful design of this ancestral land management program.'

but also a great source of national pride. What's great about the Banaue Rice Terraces is that they were built through cooperative means and for a more noble purpose of sustainaining the survival of a community. A classic example of bayanihan.

So instead of pulling one another down, let’s push each other up. Enough with the crap. If our ancestors did it, we can do it again [not the terraces, silly!]. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggthumpup.gif)
