Why is the word "yarou" considered derogatory if it means "rascal" in Japanese?

Are there other words that have both a positive or negative connotation in Japanese depending on how they're used?

Hello. Can someone please answer these questions?

from what i've been told

Japanese doesnt have cuss words. I heard theyre really really mild. Its not to the point where it would be as bad as "fu-k."

Most words we would consider "bad" are still allowed on TV, even in children's shows. As mentioned above, "kuso" is an expletive similar to $hit, but it's completely okay to use.

The two worst words are "manko" (profane word for vagina, similar to "c_nt") and "kichigai" (an offensive word for "psycho" that's like calling someone "retarded" or "fu-ked up"). Manko is considered the most taboo word in the Japanese language, and even amongst friends it's rarely said above a whisper. Who knows why. Kichigai is another one of those that's never said on TV and never written without censoring, even on hardcore punk t-shirts.

If you want to offend someone, it's mostly done with tone of voice and politeness of speech. Like someone said, while arguing, the politer you get, the more offensive it is.

Hi- I went elsewhere and asked what "yarou" means and I was told:

It's just a crude way of referring to another person. Along the lines of "guy" or "jerk." It's not the worst insult in the world, but it's definitely not flattering to be called "yarou". Further, it can be combined with other words to make it more pejorative:

Baka (stupid) + yarou (guy/jerk) = stupid jerk
Nanpa (womanizer/player, pejorative) + yarou = skeeze
Ano (that) + yarou (guy/jerk/bastard) = that bastard
Kuso (crap/sh*t) + yarou (bastard) = sh*tty bastard/piece of sh*t person

Yarou sometimes means "man/guy". Original meaning of Yarou is "young man", so it does not always has offensive senses. It's same to "bastard" in English, when it's used as "lucky bastard!" does not always has a sense of offense.

In Kansai area, it is used the same as "darou" in Kanto area, which is kind of like "it seems" or "I guess."

Are these answers accurate?

Languages are basically impossible to learn (well, that is) off paper, or in a classroom. I would say you just have to go to Japan and speak it as much as possible, to get it right. Or find a bunch of Japanese friends and talk a lot to them.

(By the way, in a sense, bigboy is right. There are very few words in Japanese that are considered bad enough to be censored. And yes, in the Kansai area, "yaro" is the same as "daro," but that's all in connotation and you'll learn to tell the difference.)

They probably do have cuss words. What do you think they called the people they murdered when they invaded the rest of Asia?
