The friens function on the profile - can someone explain its concept to me? and err, how to use it?

I think it's there so if your friends aren't online/haven't posted in awhile you can find their name so you can pm them and $hit. It's better than the search function because sometimes I forget people's names. Mine used to not work, but now it does. You just click "add as friend" on the person's profile.
