Full Version: Looking For Vietnam's Country Music
Asia Finest Discussion Forum > Asian Culture > Vietnamese Chat
Seamus
Seriously! I really am looking for country music from Vietnam.

What kind of music? Ok, not classical or court music and not really traditional music. But modern music with traditional roots. Music with a dance beat but not pop.

The neighbouring countries have it and I know Vietnam must have it but I can't find it. So what the heck am I talking about? If you go to Monsoon-Country and listen to some of the samples from other Southeast Asian countries, you'll hear it.

I have one Vietnamese song on the home page that sounds a bit country, a bit reggae and I'm sure it's some kind of comedy song, although I don't understand it. It may be a bit corny too but that would make it country, right?

If you go to the Vietnam page I have several folk songs there. They're lovely and all but not the kind of up-beat, get-down-and-dance music I know the country folks listen to.

So, if anyone is not too embarrassed to admit to liking this kind of music, please let me in on the secret. It's all for a good cause, believe me.
supernovasp
Hmm.. I sampled some Cambodian ones, and I think there's a style of the Vietnamese music similar to it. It's often called "nhac sen" which means "cheesy music". (NO I'm not kidding)

Truong Vu is well known singer who sings these kind of songs.

And the one Vietnamese song you posted is kinda weird. They sing in Southern style, but their accent is Northern. (Often switch the R sound with sz/z)
ngo.ngochy
embarassedlaugh.gif that song is hilarious.. I think there's a song that's similar to that called Giang Cau.. I have a song named Ly Noi Lao, it's about "lying", really cute. I can send it to you.
Seamus
That's the one... it's called "Giang Cau" and it's sung by Tran Thien and Ngoc Diem. I downloaded it from www.tialia.com. But it was the only one of that style that I could find. And when I tried to buy the CD, the online company didn't have it in stock. This is the cover

I'm curious about the reference to Southern style and Northern accent. Are the singers from the North and making fun of the South, or vice versa? Can you tell me something about the lyrics, what they're saying to each other.

Yes, please send me "Ly Noi Lao". Could you go to my website and contact me from there. I don't want to put my email address here because of the spam thing.

Thanks a million.

LOL I NEVER THOUGHT OF WHAT OTHER COUNTRY;S COUNTRY MUSIC SOUND LOIKE.... I WAS THINKIGN VIETNAMESE IN A COWBOY HAD AND SOME LEATHER BOOTS WITH A SOUTHERN DRAW embarassedlaugh.gif
ngo.ngochy
embarassedlaugh.gif the lyric isn't of the song Giang Cau though, the original one was sung by Tai Linh and (the guy with the glass but I forgot his name).. and it's about fishing. This song is about mustache. It's basically.. the girl asked the guy to shave his mustache, but the guy refuse to.

Having mustache is not pervert,
Having mustache is to let us know we like women
Having mustache is not old,
Having mustache is to let us know we're men

B --Hey, stay home, I'm go out for awhile, and come right back
G --Hey, where are you going and dressed up nice like this
B --Oh, I'm getting my haircut,
G --Oh, remember to shave your mustache too
B --This mustache, I'll just trim, trim to look nice, I won't shave

G I ask you why you want mustache
B -- you are asking such a weird question
B I said what's wrong with mustache
G --Your mustache looks weird

..... it's long!! embarassedlaugh.gif

They're not making fun of southern/northern accents.

Oh, i sent you the song. Enjoy icon_smile.gif

like in america when someone says "country music" one usually thinks of the southern farmer rural singing...

i just never really thought of what other country's "country music" is like before...

i think it would be cool if someon was to compile a cd of the world's "country music" embarassedlaugh.gif

This "save your mustache" comedy is from a very common South Vietnamese style, "dân ca - kịch hài hước" (traditional hilarious piece).

That is, after the separation of Vietnam into North and South in 1954, a lot of Northerners migrated into the South... "kịch" is mainly of Northern theatre, "cải lương" of Southern "renovated theatre".

So, this piece of sung comedy is one of those, and to which is added a Southern "vọng cổ" part ("xuống sáu câu"!!!) like in very popular "Tân cổ giao duyên" (mix of modern and ancient singing***), but as it is sung (rather than played), that's done on a festive (not dancing) "dân ca" rythm - for the joy and hilarity of grown-ups and kiddies.

"Ban AVT" (the AVT Band) was famous in former Saigon for this kind of joke-singing. Everybody probably still can remember the "Ba bà đi bán lợn sề" play-song.

You'll probably find more if you have the time to look at this Google resulting search about the "ban AVT".

*** Nota. Modern Vietnamese songs are always (to be) sung with the Northern accent. The mixing of North-Central-Southern accent in the same comedy is to add a gross charming tone to the overall. "hehe"

Ngoc-Hy, you're right, that mustache song is funny and you did a great job with the translation. It's strange how humour is the same the world over. Things that are funny in Asia are probably funny in Europe and in Africa and in America and everywhere else. It all boils down to that fact that we humans are pretty much the same at heart, no matter how different we appear on the outside.

And thanks for the song. I've only had a chance to listen to it once but that guy sure sounds like he's poking fun at someone or something.

Supernovasp, I did a search on www.rangdong.com for Truong Vu and listened to a couple of his songs. He seems to be a singer-songwriter but it's not the kind of country music I'm after. Or maybe he's too cheesy to be country! :guitar:

Dalawapo, I'm afraid it wouldn't all fit on a CD. At the very least it would have to be a box-set! icon_rolleyes.gif But if you're really interested in finding out about the world's music, country or otherwise, the best place to start is at home. You might be amazed at the variety of musical expression to be found in your own backyard.

Ithv22, that song "Non Nước Hữu T́nh" is very good and it almost sounds familiar. Was it used in a film recently or where could I have heard it?

Well, he's bored and making stuff up, he sing all these impossible situations, like his cat hunted deers and a bunch of other stuff, and then at the end he just said that everyone lies and that he's not the only one. It's probably poking fun of human nature confused.gif To me it's just for entertainment. =]

Seamus, I just posted this from my other post, and I think you'll like these - traditional songs with a fast / pop beat (some of them are, not all)

MP3s!!! Here are some old and new folk songs and some songs.

Remember to rename to an mp3 file after downloading. My college is going to kill me, so I'm probably going to take this down tomorrow (might put it up later).

Ai Van - Beo Dat May Troi

Ai Van % Elvis Phuong - Qua Cau Gio Bay

Kieu Hung - Beo Dat May Troi

Ngoc Ha - Non Nuoc Huu Tinh

Nhu Quynh - Loi Ru Cua Me from my other thread

Nero874, don't worry, this is all in the name of academic research, right?

For those of you who liked the last Tran Thien & Ngoc Diem duet (and you know who you are), here's another one that I managed to grab from TiaLia before they went off-line: Trung Loto

Don't forget to check out some of the other music at Monsoon-Country

I can't say enough about Lam Salavan. After you listen to it a few times, you begin to hear all kinds of jazzy improvisations from the band, all the while the singer, Nola Saotanvai, is belting out the rap-like vocals. It really is great stuff.

Seamus,

I just wanted to thank you for all the songs, they are so funny!! embarassedlaugh.gif

The first song you posted here is hilarious!! LOL. I have also listened to all the Viet songs at Monsoon-country, and they are are soo funny. I think these are Vietnamese country music, but made into comedies, more of.

My soundcard hadn't been working for a while, so I couldn't listen to these when you made this thread. Since you posted in Nhac Dong Que, I remembered of this thread, and just now listened to the songs. And I enjoyed them very much. Thank you for sharing! icon_smile.gif

Please let me know if you'd like any more Viet country songs, some I've posted in the other threads- Seamus or anyone (Tuan, anh Thanh, Linh =)... )

I also have some more. But pardon its limitedness, as these are the only ones I have on mp3 now. Very good though.

tranquilsea, yes please! I'll take any country songs that you think would be suitable for the Monsoon-Country website.

I've created an account on www.streamload.com but I'm not sure how this works?
tranquilsea
Hey Seamus,

Sure, I'll be happy to send them to you. You just need to give me your streamload name (can PM me or include here); and it works like an email account, except we have 30 days trial for one account, and we can only make 100MB worth of downloads. When someone sends a file, it will appear in your inbox; click on the file name, and it will take you to the music files.

I'm guessing most of the songs I've uploaded there would be considered country music. Most are country songs, and some are more like folk songs, with some country feel to it. I've also uploaded a few non-country ones also, so please refer to the other threads (Who here likes nhac dong que or your list of mp3s) for my list and to help you decipher.

The good thing about streamload is that it allows us to do batch uploads, while at yousendit.com, I don't think we can do batch uploads..

*Edit*

Well I went ahead and uploaded these songs through yousendit.com; all of these are country songs and folksongs of the South. I hope you enjoy them.

PHI NHUNG:

Tieng Ho Mien Nam

Thuong Em Ly Miet Vuon

Noi Buon Chim Sao

Ly Con Sao Bac Lieu

Great. I don't suppose it would hurt if I give you the login name here... 'smckenna'.

I listened to those songs you posted yesterday and they're very nice. Sometimes I think producers can spoil a song by adding lush orchestration when it's not really needed. Simple arrangements, mixing traditional instruments with bass and drum can be most effective, especially if the singer has a good strong voice.

If I cound understand Vietnamese I'd be on discussion forums with people from there, asking about current music trends. As I mentioned in another post, I'm convinced there are young bands making great country music in Vietnam but we just don't get to hear it.

One of the goals of Monsoon-Country is to give exposure to this kind of music and to change perceptions of Southeast Asia. People in the west tend to think of Asian music in terms of classical or court music from a bygone era. And there's nothing wrong with that but it doesn't tell us anything about the vitality of modern life there. It's doubtful the farmers in the countryside or labourers in the city are sitting around listening to 'Hue Imperial music' at the end of a hard day's work. Dance music is probably what they like to hear and maybe some of those comedy songs too.

I know I'll eventually find the kind of music from Vietnam that I'm looking for, maybe when I visit next year. Tracking it down should make for an interesting adventure indeed.
tranquilsea
I have sent the music files to you, hope it went through fine. icon_smile.gif I have just uploaded some more songs also; if you'd like, I can send them to you. icon_smile.gif
Nero874
Seamus, I've uploaded these songs for Tranquil, but thought these could be a nice addition to your collections too. The song is called "Hon Vong Phu" and is split into three songs, I, II, and III. It tells the story about a Vietnamese woman with her kids who are waiting on the mountains for her soldier husband to come home. She waited for 1000 years and then turned to stone. The song is basically about the sacrifice and unwavering loyalty of the Vietnamese women.

Phi Nhung - Hon Vong Phu I

Thai Thanh - Hon Vong Phu I, II, III

I've also added another song by the same composer:

Thai Thanh - Me Viet Nam Oi

tranquilsea
Oh wow, thanks a lot, Nero874. icon_smile.gif I've always liked Hon Vong Phu- it's a very dramatic and moving song; and especially liked Thai Thanh's version too. I actually love Thai Thanh's singing very much; she has an unmatched charisma and style for classical and national songs, very famous songs composed by the reputed Pham Duy.

I also really like her singing of Tinh Ca, Nuoc Non Nghin Dam Ra Di, and Long Me.. She truly can make wonders.. her singing is like the voice of Mother Vietnam.. I think there is actually a saying in her attribution.. "Thái Thanh là tiếng ca của nước non".. or something like that.. Her truly marvelous voice is meant for the most meaningful classical songs of Vietnam..

Oh would you or anybody happen to have the song, "Tinh Ca" sung by Thai Thanh, and be so kind as to tell me where I can download it? .. it goes like this.. "Tôi yêu tiếng nước tôi từ khi mới ra đời.." This is truly a masterpiece I think.. Thanks! (I think I'll put it in the meaningful songs thread...hehe)
