Many Siamese told the world that Thailand means land of the free. To me Thailand is just a noun. Just like Lao, Khmer, and Viet. Thailand doesn't means land of the free. Some Thai politician made up the meaning just to make it sounds good and appearing to the western world.

land of the free... whatever...

land of the free = antartica

Manleow
i think Thai is just for Tai ppl, like Tai as in Lao,

because the government wanted to connect Thai history with the Tai ppl, and get away with the Siamese connection with the Khmer ppl.

that why in Thailand history books, they say they come from China, and not Angkor.

so that there history will make more sense with the political agenda, being that Isaan and Lanna are Tai ppl of orgin, and that now the majority of the land were of this orgin, siamese wouldnt make sense anymore.

OK, Siam under Rama the 8th and Marshal Peboln "Peebah" had signed contract with the Japanese govt. if the Japanese win the war the land in Southeast Asia will belong to the Siam under the new name of Thailand. Thankfully the Japanese lose and as the result 1 leader in Siam have to fake his own death to save the Throne......

Mr. Xieng Peuk , why do you have to have so many names Mr. ? So Mr. 8 is still alive kicking back travel from laos to Thailand and Thailand to laos? Was he in Laos too last year bro? The treaty was sign that if Siam let Japan travel through Siam then there would be a reward if Japan wins the war. The reward was : Siam territory that was lost and taken by the french would be return to Siam and be a greater Thai kingdom or Tai kingdom. Bangkok also ask the leader of Lanxang to uprise and over throw the French at one time. Bangkok had ask many leaders of Lanxang to return and be part of Siam. In return, the lao kingdom would be treated better and have better living standard than what the french have to offer at the time. Petsarath once replied that lao on the east bank would only unite if there is two seperat government unite as one kingdom.
