Hello! New to this forum. I had heard so many negative things about it but when I came to check it out I found it quite interesting.

I live and work in Korea, teaching at a middle & high school and really love it. Korea may be the most ridiculous place on earth but I seem to fit right it, so I guess I'm not one to talk. Actually, I find Korea extremely interesting, even if it does have its frustrations at times. I think what entralls me so much about it is that Koreans think so differently from people where I'm from.

I really enjoy getting a variety of perspectives on Korea and other Asian countries, from people of as many cultures, ethnicities, and nationalities as possible. I'm especially interested in how other Asians view Korea. I'm very politically incorrect and a bit sexist, so please don't read too much insult where none was really intended in what I write.

Cheers from Hicksville, ROK.

No I'm not Korean - I teach English. Actually my Korean's crap for someone who's been here so long, though sadly better than some of my foreign friends who have been here just as long or longer.

So many foreigners know Korean! Wow thats cool. Makes me want to learn it more. So you went to college to get a teaching degree in Korean-English? I notice a lot of people from America go to Korea to teach English, though Im nto sure how you start.

Most Korean ex-pats knowledge of Korean is survival at best, including mine. I have been surprised at where it's come in handy a few times, however (talking to a Russian labourer, a Chinese passenger on an aeroplane whose parents live in Korea, etc.).

I went to uni to study English history (amongst other things) and after spending a decade as a career student dropped out of my PhD programme and came to Korea. I landed my present job rather serendipitously.

The bare minimum to get a (legal) teaching job as an American is simply a BA in any field. However, you may also qualify for an 'F-' visa through ancestry, in which case you could live here legally and tutor. American tutors can make surprisingly good money if they get a good network of private students.

Ex-pat means ex-patriot, someone who no longer resides in his native country. I sure don't speak Russian. I did, however, once use Korean to communicate with a Russian I met who's working here. Most Russians I've met here speak a bit of English but his was almost non-existant. It's a good thing we were on an empty street, as Koreans probably would have found our conversation hilarious.

I have no idea what the procedure is for someone with a Korean father to get an F- visa. If your father is an American citizen you may need an immigration lawyer to help you out. However I'd come to Korea as a tourist first for a short while to check the place out and see how you like it. If you have or get a university degree you can find many recruiters who can get you a (probably crappy) teaching job with an E-2 visa very easily, or you can do a lot of research yourself to get one that has better odds of working out.

So you really dont speak much Korean? What exactly do you teach in Korea? I know you said you were going to school for English PHD. So you dont really speak Korean, you speak english to your students?

Thanks for the tips. I dont want to live there, was just speculating.

I teach EFL as well as writing and drama at my school. For the most part my lessons supplement the Korean English teachers' lessons with more of a focus on speaking, pronunciation, listening, and a bit of writing. I conduct my lessons mostly in English with a bit of Korean thrown in. I also use a lot of bi-lingual handouts. It has its challenges but most of the students are really nice and I think I have a lot easier time of it than most teachers in America.

I'm a white guy who couldn't get laid in America nor find a job with my major in art history..even though mommy told me to do accounting

I decided to move to Korea because I heard they like "exotic" white men and there is a demand for English teachers

I end up sleeping with hookers around the military bases and occasionally my underaged students that I take advantage of.

The locals now know what a sleezeball I am, so now I'm trying to chat with Asian girls on Asiafinest.com forums who I end up sending fake picks to, meeting and instead being caught by chris hensen in to catch a predator.

My dad's friend is simliar to you. Got his master's in English from a small private university which didn't translate into any jobs.

Had trouble getting laid

Saw Korea as an adventure to actually get work and to get some naive young girls

He screwed a student his first day. He goes to taiwan to teach. Ends up marrying a wife from there. They go back home and have a daughter. She ends up beating him up every time he comes back home drunk because he drinks because he realizes how much of a loser he is. They divorce. He bought a condo at the housing boom peak at 250k, and it's now worth 160K, so he's 90K short on it...while he teaches US ghetto kids who throw papers at him.

I see a happy life on the horizon for you. Enjoy.

Wow, accusing people of sleeping with underage students at first encounter? It's nice to see you regard yourself as such an intellectual heavyweight.

BTW, UB-Love is the place for chatting with Asian girls on-line. The ones here - if any of them are real - sound way the hell too westernised for my liking. biggthumpup.gif

This whole forum has struck me as surprisingly western so far. Perhaps I just underestimated the impact of western culture on Asia as a whole, how out of touch many Asian-Americans are with their countries of ancestry, and what an effect having to use English as a language of international communication has had.

Oh right, you are too drunk to ask them for their age. If they didn't tell, they are over 18.

The fact that you know the website to chat with the girls, and the fact that you like them "Asian" proves my hypothesis right. English teacher white males who go to Asia are among the biggest losers in the world because your goals there are quite obvious. That's why I was able to predict correctly spot on your history. Crappy major. No job offers in the US. Fetish for Asian women because you couldn't get a white girl who is smart enough not to date a loser like yourself.

The saying goes. White failures in America go to Asia.

Jealous? No no no. I'm rather disgusted at vermin like yourself who prey on underaged women. Chris Hensen feels the same way. I guess he, who actually has a job in the US, is jealous too of your type? He did a whole episode on "English teacher" who go to Asia to "explore culture" but end up raping underaged girls.

"Over-educated, unemployable Canuck enjoying easy existance in Korea"

I'm not jealous of somebody who couldn't get a job in his own country nor get laid and needed to go to Korea to do both. Anybody can go to Korea and get laid. It doesn't make you special. All my friends in the army there are having a fun time partying. Everybody from North America who goes there has fun. At the same time, most who go there are losers like yourself or are on a stop before they go to Iraq. Not a very enviable position.

I admire people who have real jobs in the states and major in real subjects like engineering, accounting, chem, etc. I'm not jealous of English majors who have no future in their lives...but teaching English in Asia.

No $hit sherlock. But the same thing goes on in all the Asian countries. That's why you see 55 year old men with 18 year old brides. Because thugs and losers and outcasts of original society like yourself take advantage of poorer people or underaged people. It happens all over developing continents, including South America and Africa.

Why would you have a real job? So you wouldn't be doing a job that just qualifies you being a native speaker of English to do.

You apparently don't know how the army works BTW. People do other people favors and people take risks to go out. But at least they are doing something honorable and manly and risking their lives for a greater cause whether you believe in US policy or not. They are brave men.

You? You're a loser who couldn't get a job because of your useless degree, and you teach English, which you don't need a degree to do. But I guess you do enjoy your job there because white women are smart enough to stay away from you, and you do a good job taking advantage of naive underaged Korean women.
