JERUSALEM -- A young monkey at an Israeli zoo has started walking on its hind legs only -- aping humans -- after a near death experience, the zoo's veterinarian said Wednesday.

Natasha, a 5-year-old black macaque at the Safari Park near Tel Aviv, began walking exclusively on her hind legs after a stomach ailment nearly killed her, zookeepers said.

Monkeys usually alternate between upright movement and walking on all fours. A picture in the Maariv daily on Wednesday showed Natasha standing ramrod straight like a human. The picture was labeled humorously, "The Missing Link?"

Two weeks ago, Natasha and three other monkeys were diagnosed with severe stomach flu. At the zoo clinic, she slipped into critical condition, said Igal Horowitz, the veterinarian.

"I was sure that she was going to die," he said. "She could hardly breathe and her heart was not functioning properly."

After intensive treatment, Natasha's condition stabilized. When she was released from the clinic, Natasha began walking upright.

"I've never seen or heard of this before," said Horowitz. One possible explanation is brain damage from the illness, he said.

I thought only humans walk on their hind legs.

That is why this is eerie...I'm kind of freaked out. It would be really scary if she started talking like humans..AHH!
JMAC
It would be freaky if it starts running and chasing humans using those 2 legs while making mad ape like sounds.

OMG IT WOULD eek.gif I'm staying away from that..zoo. AND...that would be the freakiest movie. Or show. Or whatever. AHHHH...so scary.

It took million of years of evolution to "walk upright". If these monkeys suddenly start to walk with 2 limbs, it'll cause internal injury.

That ape looks delicious. munch.gif

I would scream and run away. If they did that.

I meant if they made a movie about apes suddenly walking upright like humans and then killing us and stuff.

In fact, I personally believe this piece of evolution was probably an accident. Why did our ancestors started to "walk" is still debatable, but I think it's a result of numerous "coincidences" and accidents. Walking upright was not the best option, and we're still pay the price. When walking upright, it makes it more difficult for our spinal cord to hold our brain. In a long run, our spinalcord would be bent into a "S" shape. Plus, all of our internal organs would downshift to the pelvis. Consequently, it causes back pain and hernia.
Then why did we choose to walk upright? It was probably due to the forming of Gregory Rift, causing the climate to become dry. Thus grassland overtook the original forests. Perhaps it was because we were using tools, walking with rear limbs enabled us to carry tools around. Perhaps it gave us a better vision in order to reduce number of conflicts, as our activity circle expanded. Perhaps we erected our body to prevent overheating. Perhaps we just felt like it. All these accidents coincided at the same time, and here we are, walking with "legs". No matter what we've been through, walking with rearlimbs expanded our brain capcity by 3 times.
I don't know what's happening to this gorilla, but it's not doing anything good when he suddenly started to walk like that. She's not going to make it anywhere.

Agreed. It's body is definetely not conditioned to do anything like that.

They spotted this ape driving a stick shift truck yesterday on higway 5.

why we started to walk upright could just be as simple as looking out for predators and have better vision. an animal up a tree is safer and can see what's going on much better than on all fours on the ground. meerkats do it all the time and stand on their hindlegs to see what's going on and look out for predators. we just probably started to do the same thing and realized it was beneficial and kept doing it. this curtails faster speed so toolmaking (weapons) was essential for survival and so on and so forth.
