I agree with the second caller that Filipino parents in America should teach their kids their language (Tagalog, Ilocano, etc.) and that the failure to do so does illustrate the lack of pride that the Filipino-American community has in general when compared, say, to Vietnamese or Hispanics or Chinese in America.

I agree even though I know very little Tagalog myself, thanks to a decision made by my parents which I personally think was misguided and weak-minded.

What do you all think?

i agree with the second caller too and that this types of Filipino parents are doing deserve for thier children. having multuiple language is a plus this day in age of globalization. lucky me my moms left me be and i choose to retain my Tagalog and it never stopped me from moving forward and obtaining what i want in life.

Lol @ the first caller. Almost all south Americans i know who are born here are able to speak spanish, this means their parents think their language is important as part of the culture while some parents pinoys perhaps think tagalog is an enferior and irrelevant language for their children to learn. tsk tsk tsk

Or perhaps it means that the immigrant parents of latino chilren can not speak English. There are many 3rd, 4th generation hispanics who only speak English. Unlike filipino families who budget first for the education of the kids they are more likely to withdraw their children from school to work. And to work in many low skilled occupations in America the language of the work force is now spainish.

and do you want to be part of that work force?

the point is your idenity and your heritage is being lost in the mass media that is predom. white when you aren't. all other asian make it point to teach their kids their language.

Some culures have special Culture schools where parents can send their kids to learn the language, traditions, culture, and history of their home country. I remember some of my chinese friends going to so called "chinese schools" after normal 8-3 classes. Although my friends hated it at the time, they all appreciated it later on. This is something that Filipinos should do! Especially in areas like LA or the Bay or Chicago or Philly where there are large Filipino populations... it would be a positive after school program if you ask me!
Being bi-lingual and bi-cultural is a huge advantage in the USA.

Is it wrong to hate your parents because they think like caller no. 1? icon_sad.gif
