Gender of Nouns: Part I

A noun is a word used to denote a person, place, thing, or idea.

Person: John, girl, dentist
Place: garden, university, Venezuela
Thing: book, car, tomato
Idea: liberty, despair, intelligence

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Spanish, all nouns are either masculine or feminine.

Masculine Feminine
el chico
boy
la chica
girl

el jardín
garden
la universidad
university

el libro
book
la revista
magazine

el miedo
fear
la libertad
liberty

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The idea that nouns have gender seems perfectly natural when the noun stands for a living creature. This is because in English, living creatures often have different names, depending upon whether they are male or female.

Masculine Feminine

man woman
tiger tigress
aviator aviatrix

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following Spanish nouns all denote living creatures.

el gato
male cat
la gata
female cat

el perro
male dog
la perra
female dog

el chico
boy
la chica
girl

el abuelo
grandfather la abuela
grandmother

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How are all of these masculine nouns alike?

el gato
el perro
el chico
el abuelo
Hint: look at both the beginning and the ending of each line.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How are all of these feminine nouns alike?

la gata
la perra
la chica
la abuela
Hint: look at both the beginning and the ending of each line.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"El" and "la" both mean "the."

el chico (the boy)
la chica (the girl)
el perro (the male dog)
la gata (the female cat)
Note: These two words (el, la) are called "definite articles." You will learn more about them in a later lesson.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What do you notice about the last letter of these nouns?

Masculine

gato
perro
chico
abuelo

Feminine

gata
perra
chica
abuela

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nouns that end in -o are usually masculine. Nouns that end in -a are usually feminine.

Notice the word "usually!" There are exceptions to these two rules and you will soon be learning them.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One cannot predict the gender of a noun that stands for a non-living thing. Try to predict whether the Spanish words for the following things are masculine or feminine:

Masculine or feminine?

book
house
money
window

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One cannot predict the gender of a noun, except in the case of living creatures. Do not try to analyze the nature of the object, looking for some inherent masculinity or femininity. It won't work!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Take a guess. Do you think the Spanish word for "dress" is masculine or feminine? You might expect it to be feminine, since a dress is an article of clothing worn by females. Actually, the word for "dress" is a masculine word:

el vestido

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Take another guess. Do you think the Spanish word for "necktie" is masculine or feminine? You might expect it to be masculine, since a necktie is an article of clothing worn by males. Actually, the word for "necktie" is a feminine word:

la corbata

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When you learn a new noun, you should also learn its definite article (el, la). There are several reasons for this:

Because you cannot predict the gender of most nouns.

Because not every noun that ends in -o is masculine, and not every noun that ends in -a is feminine.

Because many nouns end in letters other than o or a.

Because the definite article (el, la) is your clue as to whether a noun is masculine or feminine.

Vale, in Spain you would say "Quiero follarte?" , in Cuba "Quiero singarte", in Mexico "Quiero chingarte", in Argentina and most other places i guess ,in Latin America " Quiero cojerte"

In Spain:

La polla (means d!ck)
El coño ( means pussy)

In Cuba:

La pinga (means d!ck)
El bollo (means pussy)

In Argentina:

La pija (means d!ck)
La concha (means pussy)

and most other Latin American contries including Mexico:

La verga (means d!ck)
La panocha (means pussy)

hope this helps for when anyone encounters a hispanic babe icon_wink.gif

The song is very good. I always wondered what Chabacano sounded like, it's clearly influenced by Andalusian Spanish (southern Spain), despite it's broken the pronunciation is not so bad compared to Latin Americans who have weird accents. I like it.

No MILTON, my country is not so poor that I have to migrate sailing across the ocean on a truck tyre and then feel proud about being in a country that's not mine.

I'm Spanish, and unlike you who come from a third world country I don't have the need to "migral" as you Cubans say.

And people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Stop making fun on tomato pickers and toilet cleaners. Probably some of your relatives does that job.

the % of Cubans who come illegally is not even close to the % that come legally on planes... we are such "pinguos" (im sure you'll love that word icon_wink.gif , osea tenemos las pollas tan grandes) that we are the only ones who can come illegally and get our papers....not even you with your KING CARLOS THE f@g can get that laugh.gif

on top of that, Cuba is not a 3rd world country, i suggest picking up a book, or utilizing gee the internet, the wonderful tool you have at your fingertips and educate yourself, you'll be surprised where Cuba ranks against other countries in almost every sector with UN statistics...

funny that you mention that quote about throwing stones at the glass house, because my great grandparents from both sides all came from Spain, and Cuba is the result of Spanish imperialism, so its funny how you insult me, when if you probably see me in real life and i put my Spanish accent you would probably think im your fellow countryman...so i really don't know where you get your beef with me, probably had a bad experience with a Cuban before, ohh well im so sorry he stole your wife...

and yes, i will not stop making fun of tamatoe picking and toilet cleaning people, or Mexicans etc...because like i said you need to get out more and learn, because Cubans pretty much rule Miami, we have senators and mayors and House of Representatives and Secretary of Commerce and Coca Cola presidents and in this country with a population of only about 1 million, while Mexicans have like 26 million people, is a very very big achievement if you ask me...
