Tran Le Duy Nhat is the first Vietnamese golfer to compete in a state professional league sanctioned by the US National Golf Federation after making it through the qualified round last Monday in California.
Surpassing 140 contenders at Red Hawk golf course in Murrieta, Nhat – who turns 18 in two months – secures a spot to the California State Open Championship 2007, which lasts from September 25-29 at the same venue.
The player, now a senior student at Linfield high school in Temeccula, has played for the Vietnam team in the past. At the age of 15, he qualified and represented Vietnam in SEA Games 2005, Asian Games 2006 and other open tournaments.
With stable progress in the last two years, Nhat’s career is developing well. According to the latest ranking released in July this year, he is fourth out of 375 players in California division of players between the ages of 16-18.
The ranking is based on the scores from seven tournaments, in which he won two gold and two silver medals.
Nhat recognizes his improvement and attributes it to the training with Rickie Fowler, the US first-ranking golfer in 18-year division, and Tom Pernice Jr. the world’s number 63rd.
