OK, here is something new ... actually quite not. This just shows how the relation between Russia & Vietnam is warming. After like 10, 15 years or so, Vietnam will have some kind of big celebration for the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. Take it as a real shocking joke. TV-Novosti of Russia also showed a Documentary "Vietnam: Back on the Map", well, the title does have lots of implication there. Below is the link to the documentary, which is quite long 45 min ~ 1 hour.

I don;t think it's so much that communism is on the rise but rather an independent Vietnam is on the rise. True communism is really dead. Russia is trying to create a multi-polar geopolitic world to oppose the US domination, so it wants to pull back its former allies. Vietnam has to be careful not to be in the camp of one or the other. We can partner with anyone who brings money for investments but not for political posturing.

Is it so, or is there a fear that Vietnamese-American will be poorly treated if Vietnam turns against the US? For Vietnamese-American interests, they probably don't want Vietnam to go against the US, but their personal interests might not be best for Vietnam.

lol, what can Vietnam do to piss off the US realistically? There is no such fear for Vietnamese-American.

In reality, Vietnam don't hesitate to punch the U.S. once in a while. The last time, Hugo Chavez was in Vietnam, he did have a great show telling Vietnamese people how imperialistic the U.S. is. laugh.gif But no one give a damn, lolz, the U.S. pisses off SRV once in a while in his own media. Anyways, Vietnam is quite masterful at that, there are many vocal anti-US leaders around.

asean: what's up with the Vietnamese-American thing? confused.gif

tdk: uhm... yeah, your concern is right. But in any case, Vietnam is an actor not a reactor. Considering the relationships with the four: RUIC, I doubt that they will try to push us around off-limit, but of course, the relationships between India, the U.S., Russia will be more friendly.

I don't think Viet-Americans are a factor. US already pissed them off three times now: first the lifting of trade embargo, second the normalization, and third the WTO membership. papabearvn is probably right that Vietnam is doing all the acting just to get foreign investments for economic development. So I think Vietnam has to be careful not to piss any country off so they stop investing in Vietnam. That's all.

I think there are three main camps when it come to Viet-Americans:

1.) Anti-Vietnam government above all else
2.) Anti-Vietnam government but consider economic progress more important
3.) Pro-Vietnam

The folk in group 1 are very vocal, hence it seem like all Viet-American fall into this category. However, I conjecture that there are many folk out there in camp 2 and 3, the silent majority you could say.

I think you're right. The group 1 is also engaging in harassments, threats, and even murders. Hence, groups 2 and 3 have to be silent for their own safety. How sad. Group 1 always drags out stupid things like democracy and human rights and they are doing the same things that they are condemning. Young Viet-Americans hopefully are more educated and move away from this hateful attitude.

I think it is more complicated than that. It's been long gone the time of the cold war or when china just emerged. Things will become very complex where countries' geopolitical interests are extremely inter-woven. Friend or foe: that will be the question, as long as Vietnam can avoid it, there will be the time that Vietnam has to make a choice and better to be a super smart choice. The famous Nixon's detente will be minor compared to the future detentes in the coming of multipolar world. The fight will be less in the name of democracy 'coz it will become less useful, the stick of "trade embargo" is will be handy but less than a magic wand. That's why some U.S. congressmen/women have urged to end the trade embargo on Cuba or maybe leave the back door open for the capitalist China to infiltrate. Allies that has been tested through time will be an advantage, newly established allies are prone to break up. Take Shanghai pact as an example, will it be another group of brother enemies? hehe only future can tell laugh.gif

laugh.gif come on, don't let emotion get into you. We are seeing it right now. Iraq: weapon of mass destruction. Do you think the US will just jump into Burma to fight for the sake of democracy? I doubt it. And how do you know much about me to brand me as anti-commie or hypocrite? :p did I mention anything about ideologies? no icon_twisted.gif
