AUSTRALIAN teenagers commonly complete secondary school without a firm grasp on how to construct a complex sentence, a Senate committee is believed to have found.

In a provocative report to be released today, the committee is believed to have expressed alarm at the fact that some students can go through six or more years of school and emerge functionally illiterate.

The majority report is expected to say that trainee teachers are more concerned with classroom management than teaching theory, and they often feel ill-prepared for the classroom at the end of their degrees.

The inquiry, by the Senate's standing committee on education, was announced in February, hours after Prime Minister John Howard said some school curriculums contained "incomprehensible sludge".

The timing of the inquiry prompted claims that it was a politically motivated exercise in bashing Labor states — claims believed to have been echoed by Labor members of the committee in a dissenting report.

The Age believes the report will cite evidence that students emerging from secondary school with restricted vocabulary and without a firm grasp of complex sentences somehow manage to go on to higher education.

It is believed the committee found much dissatisfaction with the bachelor of education degree, mainly due to the poor grounding offered in some university subject disciplines.

The report is likely to recommend that the lobby group Universities Australia encourage a more rigorous and evidence-based approach when educating trainees on methods of teaching literacy and maths.

It is also expected to recommend that federal and state education ministers negotiate a comparable year 12 certificate with common national standards that could be assessed in public exams.

The report is believed to say that researchers have shown that the quality of teaching is the single most important influence on students' performance.

However, it is likely to say the lack of a definition of teacher excellence hinders recognition and rewarding of teachers, specifically in terms of academic achievement.

The committee is expected to recommend a review into the remuneration of teachers to encourage more people into the profession and improve retention rates.

Under a future Coalition government, the states would be forced to introduce performance-based pay for teachers, a common national curriculum in key subjects and public year 12 exams in order to receive their share of $42 billion in federal funding from 2009.

The day the inquiry was announced, Mr Howard said the teaching of English had been allowed to drift into a "relativist wasteland", and that text messages and Big Brother were robbing children of their cultural heritage.

Federal Education Minister Julie Bishop has also repeatedly criticised standards in state schools.

The inquiry received 73 submissions and held eight public hearings across the country.

An education psychologist at RMIT University, Kerry Hempenstall, told the inquiry that the written expression of his postgraduate students was generally poor and he often fixed basic spelling and grammatical errors in their assignments.

Senior Canberra education bureaucrats warned that young Australians were inadequately prepared for the 21st century.

The committee's Labor senators, in their dissenting report, are believed to say the Government has commissioned 22 reports on standards and teacher education since 1998, but has failed to act on them.

They are also believed to claim the inquiry did not take into account the Federal Government's failure to fund programs adequately or to provide constructive policy to raise standards.

not really a big deal imo. most white kids here at my uni can't form complex sentences either. and i'm 100% sure they would have a million spelling mistakes if it weren't for word.

it's simply because people today don't read. they just watch sports and eat food.

he mentioned written expressions. I'm very very confident most american university students that aren't english majors would be destroyed as well.

Well truth is I'm not born in Aussie.

However I can type better than you.

I guess its due to lots of practice I've got in writing.

Anyways I've notice a colleague of mine has some seriously very low spelling skills.

Can't even spell "access" right without a spell checker.

WTF? For real?

Everybody in my class can speak English. Everybody in my class is able to write sentences.

I find that a bit hard to believe. In Victoria everybody must study English and the English Exam tests students on their essay writing skills.

The really sad thing is, she's beating me in English. Her grades are substantially higher than mine. Why, is this the case you might ask.. well, it's simple really... my English teacher hates my guts. I've read some of that chick's essays, they are $hit. She doesn't know which tenses to use; she mixes her present + past tenses together. She can't spell unfortunately, without having to check the dictionary. When I get my marked essays back, there are a whole lot of red markings. My teacher is retarded, she "corrects" my right spelling. She told me I spelt appalling wrong. She had the cheek to cross out a p, or she could've been a dumb fu-k. I don't know.

embarassedlaugh.gif My English teacher this year has never given me anything above a 7. The highest mark for my English essay is 6.5.
She thinks my essay is too abstract.

The one thing I dont understand is my English teacher, I never underdtood her comment and feedback. That's why I also throw out my english essays.

Another one of my teacher told me, the in class essay we wrote doesn't sound like my own words. wtf? How can I copy somebody else's writing if it was an in case essay and she gave me a 6/10.

ilu
^ I don't know. Teachers are fcking retarded these days.

We have an IT teacher that can't spell main, and my mate's english teacher from last year didn't know how to spell choose.

"Is that with one O or two O's?"

embarassedlaugh.gif that's retarded. I think teachers are more stupid because there's a teacher shortage and they'll just take whatever they can get.

ilu
^ That's so true.

I remember laughing so hard when this asian kid presented that in a speech and the teachers all passed that bull$hit with good grades and handicapped him so he could go to uni.

so many fobs i went to school with passed with good grades in english dominant subjects but wrote like they were retarded, they did esl and got A's and B's in subjects like legal studies where essays were handed in often LOL wtf mate

I cant believe half the students making it past high school nowdays, esp the white kids who write essays like they were making a text message - yes, its been done and its frequent, they are killing the english language...

australia is just setting itself up for dumb$hits in positions where misscommunication will lead to problems, esp with our hospital and nursing staff.

Lol ya know I've experience the same thing about my history teacher.

However I'm not her favorite and not her most hated student.

Somehow I was smart enough to stay out of trouble when the need arises.

Anyways I always pitied my classmates cause they had my teachers bad attitude.

Too bad for them.

Most people I know can't even be bothered reading these days so I'm not surprised about this. Come to think of it I only know 3 people that read books for leisure, me, my best mate and my mother. Everyone else can't be bothered, or would rather watch the movie, and one even told me that I have no imagination because I enjoy reading the book more. Oh I $hit you not, those were his exact words... *shrugs*

I tried to get one of my friends to read last year. He got through about a quarter of it and then quit because it was too hard. The book was John Marsden's Tomorrow, When The War Began, a book that I read in year 7... Tsk Tsk Tsk. Btw, you guys will love it when the movie comes out because an Asian guy gets the White girl. Asian music guy are pwn za Greek Adonis.
