I have a friend who was born in The Philippines but grown up in another country. When we discussed about how I'm so proud of being a Vietnamese due to our history, culture, traditions etc, he told me that he's not so proud of his Filipino heritage, it's history and culture. Etc

What do you guys think is the reason?
dalawapo
he doesnt know the true history to appreciate it!
Gasivil
The reason he's not proud of our cultural heritage and traditions is because he knows nothing about them. He may have been born here in the Philippines, but his way of thinking, his values, cultural upbringing is totally different and is essentially not Filipino in any aspect and in every aspect of his person.

Him not loving and embracing his blood heritage (if he in fact has any Filipino blood running through his veins) signifies him being lost, and will ultimately result in him having no sense of belongingness since he himself bears no love for where he came from.

I feel sorry for him, not being able to accept who he is, he will never be able to embrace another culture if he can't accept where he really is from.

I may only be 1/4 Filipino, but I am Essentially Filipino through and through, I hold Filipino Values, practice Filipino Customs, and I essentially live a Filipino life. I also hold my Chinese Heritage close to my heart, I love who I am and where I came from which makes me 100% Filipino and also 100% Chinese, by knowing who I am and loving what I am I can belong to more than one culture.

Ask any Nationalist here, if you cannot embrace where you came from, you can never embrace any other culture

Filipinos have everything stereotypically "asian"

we have our own writing script, our own martial arts, we have a 2,000 year old rice terrace culture, etc etc...

We have retain our indigenious Austronesian CULTURE AND LANGUAGE which is merely influenced with a spice of hindu, arab, chinese, spanish, and american flavors!

our land is beautiful islands with rich sealife and animal, plant diversity! We are renouned to treat women in high regard and respect like virtually no other in the world!

we also have an ancient ties witih pacific islanders not only asians! some beloileve pacific islanders origins are in our islands or the islands of the Malay Archipelago! We have a rich seafaring and exploring heritage! Such as barangays the name of our communial units and also meaning Boat alludes to that rich seafaring tradition!

and all those cultural diversity is beautifully express in the Philippine Dance troops! u can practice the philippine martial arts and dance the Indigenous, Muslim, and Spanish styles and represent the many facets of Filipino identity! A multi-cultural identity bound by a similar ethnic and lingustic brotherhood!

it is understandable. it is bound to happen when kids are faced to grow up in another society's culture. subconsciously, it tells them that philippines is inferior to the country they are living in. (take a psych class and you'll learn cool things haha)

also Filipinos are known to be among the friendliest & generous & kind ppl! we have help vietnam refugees and allow them to stay on our land! we did not kill them or make them leave in their unfortunate situation! we are welcoming to visitors throughout our history only the vistors sometimes have negative intentions and took advantage of our friendliness and try to hurt us!

i know some filipinos around here, and they avoid everything filipino! damn i was like its ok man..they wouldnt even speak the language to thier parents because i'm around for some reason. but then again theres only like 5 i know in this whole town. and the ones that do that are girls. its a shame man.
PuccaCC
u know wats funny as well.i find that mainland filipinos are more friendlier and have more manners.im not saying that thoses who were born in other parts of the world have no manners but sometimes they dont carry filipino values maybe?i myself do like being a filipino but some ppl just give a bad name to us coz of their actions and easily it turns to a stereotype on how we act. i think if i was born in Phillippine i would turn out to be more respectable and appreciate wat i have around me. being brought up in another society does change things to the filipino and therefore loses our identity.shameful!!

I don't have any Philli values. I was brought up as english. I only started to question my ethcinity a few months ago. Also being half english made it even harder to have any philli values.
PuccaCC
well it would be nice to know bout ur filipino culture as well.its who u r today.cant just live with english values.i mean im the same, ive been born and raised in the uk but i can distinguish myself as a filipino. i dont think im a very proud filipino as it doesnt really matter where u from,as long we're from this earth then im cool with that embarassedlaugh.gif
--Kaged--
yup, i hate those filipinos, especially in california, that give the whole filipino society a bad name (tough acting, black wannabe gang members who have no aspirations in life).

Yeah i completly agree but its kinda weird when one of your parents are white and has a complete different set of values and culture. Also its pretty hard to find out about my herritage (besdies the internet) by family members because most of them are white, besides my cousins who are half malay and half white. haha too much race mixing in my family hahahaha.

mainland filipnos?

and kaged filipnos in california? man i know i have been stereotupical sometimes too and would be hyporcritical to say this, but not all filipnos in california are not all that.
PuccaCC
well the distingushing gives us an idea wat a filipino is all about,we got thoses who have the traditions then we have thoses who slack away from it and dont know where they are coming from...i know wat kaged is coming from,we have some over here in the uk who talk and act they are from another race.

keichi,didnt know u were half malay..thought u were fili!!
flipcombatmedic
i understand you mam, it's just the fact that to say filipinos from a certain area in general don't give much specification thus gives way to generalization, you know what i mean mam. it's not like those same people from other place are not like that either. you know, i mean there are gangsta wannabes in persay nyc as well as california is all i mean mam.
PuccaCC
wats this mam business flip?hahahha...i think some ppl are proud to be filipino but take it the wrong way of how proud they can be.having too much pride can all go to our head.im known as a filipino and always will be.blood trails it!!hehehe. beerchug.gif

u serious? I was planning to move to California I thought its ideal since theres tons of Asians and Filipinos..I was at San Diego last summer and found it friendly but I didnt manage to get know alot of people to make a generalization...so wheres the best place to live then?
PuccaCC
Kiechi- hehe thanx for clearin that up.well im glad u got fili, can teach ya a few tricks of the trade to be a fili..dont ya think theres loads of gangsta wannabes where we are?

JMAC- u shouldnt be stopped from living in a certain place, if filipino choose to act in a certain way, then i say leave them to it,at least u know they dont know where their morals lie.

i hear pinoys in the new jersey or generally in the east coast area are more friendly..
PuccaCC
probably coz they just recently travelled from Philippines. are loads of nurses making their way as well?

no, not because they came there just recently. it's just that they don't get to meet fellow filipinos there all the time. in the california area, if you're a nurse and you want to save money to bring back home, you can never really save enough compared to those working in the east coast even though they receive lesser salaries. there's that certain filipino trait e..

i.e. Edward has a friend(let's name him Aloy) coming to LA to visit him. Once Aloy steps foot in California, Edward is gonna bring him to different people he knows in the area. Let's say you are one of Edward's friend. he goes to your house... you serve food, you offer stuffs, etc. it doesn't hurt right? he's only one visitor. yet, there are about 500k filipinos in California and you're bound to know at least 40 of them. 40 of them who have lots of relatives who would probably be seeing you too in that same year. how can you save? embarassedlaugh.gif

i don't know if the nurses are making their way to the east coast but i sure am.. icon_smile.gif new jersey is just right since it's not a big city but if ever a person needs to really shop, NY is just nearby.
PuccaCC
good theory FW, i guess by being who u are,u are then introduced to others who are the same ethnic.i guess its much easier esp when the country is new to u.but doesnt profession also help know ppl straight away...they're lucky. i think in the end some ppl arent proud being filipino coz they dont portray a certain way to make us act or be who we suppose to be. we are expected in a sense to be a typical view of filipino but we cant as the diversity of being in another society changes all that!

PuccaCC
oh right sorry i asked kiechi hehehe.i take it u dont hang around alot of fili's like u said. it is a shame and sometimes i get so pissed off.i guess dats why ppl who been born here seem to be way lot different and harder to approach, well dats my opinion anyways.

For the sake of the topic. No I do not believe im a proud Filipino, this is rather do to heavy english influence and lack of knowledge about my asian heritage.

Lack of knowledge about your Asian heritage?

Have you not met your relatives?
