It means you are atleast in the lower middle class.

Im not sure but when I went to india my aunt payed a 1000 per month I think, she also worked for other people so im not sure what her total was for each omonth.

it is definitely NOT an indicator of wealth or status. Almost every Indian, from lower-middle class to rich have maids.

Please read the post of @ssjasper2003 again. He stated that the maid also used to work in other homes as well. Most of the maids in India are not dedicated full time maids. They work in several homes in a day taking some minutes or few hours depending on the amount of work in each house, and get paid per month by each house.

And people can afford maids in India that is why they have maids, and not because it is some kind of a prestige issue. In USA the cost of labor is generally unaffordable to common people so most people have to do daily chores like washing utensils cleaning the house themselves mostly with the aid of machines.
