I'm 37.

Although he was of British ancestry, he certainly had a great love for India and her people. His largest contributions to India and her people are in aiding eliminate man eating tigers and leopards and helping preserve Indias wildlife. Since independence India has seen fit to name a national park after him, in North Western India, the area he roamed the jungles as a child and subequntly the area where he hunted most of the man eating animals. Since independence, there is little that the Indians kept that reminded them of their colonial past, but this is one of them, to me this signifies the regard India holds for him.

Ofcourse I do know about him. He is the pioneer of Tiger Conservation in India. I have read some of his short stories, his life is itself an inspiration.

I've read some of his books as well and I find them very inspiring, this is how I first came to know of him. One of the things I would like to do before I die is to visit the Jim Corbett National Park which is in North Western India and see a tiger in its natural habitat. But from what I understand poaching of tigers and leopards in India is starting to become a major issue again.

It has no white tigers. If you want to see white tigers then you should go to Bandhavgarh National Park, in Madhya Pradesh state.

Yes he did but rather then judging him true what we know now and our values of today, he should be judged on the value system of his time, when it was ok to shoot tigers. However later on in life he mainly shot man-eating tigers and did most of his other shooting through the lens of a camera. But I agree shooting tigers, not cool.

Besides the decline in the numbers of tigers in India since the late 1800's till now has little to do with tiger shooting and overwhelmingly due to the rapid increase in India's population and the subsequent destruction of the tigers habitat. Having said that with the number of tigers already so low, poaching now could certainly push the Indian tiger into extinction.

So are there currently any man eating leopards or tigers in India? About 18 months ago I was watching a show about a man eating leopard that lived on the fringe of a big-ish city, but I don't know when the documentary was filmed.
