what about pinoy shows depicting that people who do not pass the standard of beauty in the philippines being made object of ridicule and the butt of jokes? it's been long that we depicted people who have dark skin as not pretty; thus the syndrome of wanting to apply whitening lotion

let's not be double standard here. let us protests against racism against filipino BUT let us not forget to protest agianst fellow filipinos who discriminate

The Daily Show with John Stewart is a comedy show. Family guy is a comedy show. Mind of Mencia is a comedy show.
So I guess just laugh it off. Cory wasn't that revered, it would be a different story if they made fun of Rizal though.

It would be like making fun of George Washington as opposed to George W. Bush.
George Bush = even Americans make fun of him.

But making fun of George Washington = mushroom cloud in the perps backyard.

Imelda Marcos would've been a better choice for John Stewart. Put captions on her pic "slut" "greedy b!tch"

Well fu-k me.

All this whining is embarrassing. It's like demonstrating that we Filipinos can't take a joke. It's almost bordering on instances of those jihadist who can't take a joke and calling the heads of whomever even hint at trying thier hands with humor.

The Daily Show have called other people much, much worse. Trust me.

Well Filipinos, especially the older generation are a very serious bunch when it comes to being made fun of

They don't take life too seriously? My fu-king @$$ - that's just a front

Too many Filipinos push their kids to go into medicine and all those high paying jobs because they don't want their kids to live in poverty

Close this MANILA, Philippines-- Senator Benigno Aquino III denounced as “insensitive” and “in extremely poor taste” a joke that featured his mother, former President Corazon Aquino, in the hit US television show “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”

“It is sad that while adding humor to such an important issue, the producers of the show chose to use pictures that were disrespectful, insensitive and in extremely poor taste,” the senator said of the show, which has won two Peabody awards and several Emmys.

“The Daily Show,” known for its comedic interpretation of the news, last week featured a picture of Cory Aquino, an icon of Philippine democracy, with the label “slut.”

The segment, hosted by Samantha Bee, asked: Is America ready for a woman president?

Bee was seen browsing what looked like a mock perezhilton.com, a popular celebrity gossip website, glossing over pictures of world leaders like Cory Aquino, Prime Ministers Golda Meir of Israel and Margaret Thatcher of Great Britain.

Cory Aquino, as Bee browsed the website, was seen graffiti-ed with hearts and labeled “slut” in a handwritten scrawl. Thatcher, meanwhile, had her face placed on the body of US pop singer Britney Spears, photographed getting out of the car without underwear.

The British government so far has issued no protest on the segment.

Prospect of US woman president

The episode was aired over Comedy Central on Sept. 22, eight days before the season premiere of popular drama series “Desperate Housewives” over ABC which used Philippine medical education for a punchline and drew protests from Filipinos worldwide.

Senator Aquino said he understood that the joke “was intended for American viewers who are facing the possibility of having a woman president.”

The prospect of a female president has been a staple of US comedy shows.

New York Sen. Hillary Clinton is in the forefront of Democratic presidential nominations, alongside Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and former presidential candidate John Edwards. The US presidential election is set for 2008.

Prayers from Cory

“My mom only wishes to convey that she will include those who made this video in her prayers,” said Aquino, son and namesake of Philippine martyr Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.

Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago, chair of the Senate foreign relations committee, said she would ask Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo to instruct the Philippine Embassy in the United States to send a note verbale to the US State Department to protest the slur made on Cory Aquino. With INQUIRER.net

Well, the fact that you're mocked by the American media is sheer proof that you're a famous person shrug.gifs-

I can imagine the tomatoes thrown at Hillary once she wins the Democratic nomination- she's going to get worse coverage than that. But you never hear a male president being called "slut" on television like that, even in a funny way (and I don't necessarily mean that Senator who went under fire for being implicated by a cop in an airport restroom)- double standard, eh?

Cory Aquino was praised, not insulted on ‘The Daily Show’

IT hasn’t been a week since the “Desperate Housewives” hoopla over a joke that was taken out of context. And yet, here we are again with the Cory Aquino reference in “The Daily Show.” Before some journalist write an editorial about pitying Jon Stewart or the producers of The Daily Show, I feel compelled to once again shed some light on the CONTEXT of the satire.

Before I start, please view the entire satirical skit if you haven’t done so already. It’s quite too common for people to get so riled up without even seeing the “offending” video.

Now that you have seen it, let me shed some light to the context of this segment. The main character on the segment, “Samantha Bee,” embodies the typical ignorant American who, at this point in time, still thinks America is not ready for a woman president. It is actually her character and what she represents that the piece is actually poking fun of, not Corazon Aquino. Now, let’s see the supporting arguments for this.

Near the opening of the segment, “Samantha Bee” interviews her feminist friend, the president of the National Organization of Women, on her take on whether America is ready for a woman president. We are shown her frivolous attitude by being more concerned about a dress than discussing the matter. We are then shown her discussing the same matter with her conservative friend, while satirically poking fun at the arguments presented on why America needs a male presidents (such as Jimmy Carter’s sex appeal and the idea of a “nurturing” president).

We then see the “high” opinion of this character when she was working on her laptop while a gynecologist examines her vagina. It is actually during this time when we see the images of three highly respected women leaders, one of which has enraged some Filipinos. It started with former Israel Prime Minister Golda Meir with the “Oy!” marking, which is obviously poking fun at her Jewish heritage. Then, the word “Slut” on the image of Corazon Aquino, and a photoshopped Margaret Thatcher exposing her vagina that is reminiscent of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. This, of course, is in reference to gossip blogs like Perez Hilton in style and an obvious lack of substance. It is this lack of substance that makes those references to the “Oy” and “Slut” markings and Margaret Thatcher exposing her vagina, succinctly depict the idiocy of the reader “Samantha Bee.” Sure, it is tasteless but THAT IS THE POINT. It is supposed to be tasteless to show how idiotic “Samantha Bee” is and the ignorant people she represents. In fact, if you listen carefully while they are showing this fake gossip blog, she says “Other countries have had girl leaders for years. And while Golda Meir fended off Egypt, Corazon Aquino faced down dictators and Margaret Thatcher kicked out communism’s @$$, still they are women.” It is actually Corazon Aquino’s courageous image in bringing down Marcos that is the reason why she was included in this skit. It was actually meant to praise her, together with Golda Meir and Margaret Thatcher, as great examples of women leaders. How an ignorant and idiotic woman like “Samantha Bee” vilifying these women leaders, is really satirically shown as giving honor and admiration for these great women. Corazon Aquino should not feel insulted by such a gesture, but feel proud to be included in a group of noble women. She is indeed in good company.

The final scene says it all when it said: “In the end, maybe the question isn’t ‘Is America ready for a woman president’ but ‘Is a woman president ready for America’”. “Samantha Bee” then followed that up with “That doesn’t make any sense,” which is followed by a complete hosing down by “Samantha Jones” from “Sex and the City.” It is at this point that it is clearly shown what they really feel about this “Samantha Bee” character and how idiotic and stupid she is.

With the context of the satire laid out, it would probably make sense to view once again the “offending video“. Yes, folks. It is not Corazon Aquino that is being attacked here. In fact, she should be proud for being included in this segment.
