You realize the industry is banned in neighboring countries and really doesn't have a impact in the rest of Asia? Not to mention 2/3rds of their income is from so called NRI's.
JuicyFruit
^You do realize that the industry's films are watched in those neighboring countries even though they're banned, right?

Aside from Pakistan, what other country has banned Indian movies?

ssjasper2003
Overall I dont think theyd even interest anyone from other countries who arent non indians much. The storylines are a bit weak & some are ripped for other movies so I dont see it going anywhere as to where he sees it.

I think Bollywood would have to change alot to have truly massive appeal.

From what I know, there are areas in Russia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and most of South Asia in general, where Bollywood is fairly popular.

Edit: Bollywood movies are also popular across the middle east. =3

In Singapore they have a more broad following. Not sure about Thailand, but I mentioned it because of the large number of recent Indian films being shot in Bangkok, Phucket, etc. Also, I heard that the Thai tourism and commerce boards were inviting Indian producers to direct more movies in Thai locations.

yes

Bangladesh they're banned as well. The only reason Pakis like hindi movies besides having a similar/same language national language is that their Lahore based movie industry is horrible.

Source?

Indian movies are quite popular in Bangladesh, especially those that are made in Bengali. Pakistan is the only country to formally ban Indian movies, but even that ban is not all encompassing. Numerous Indian movies have legally been released in Pakistan with permission from the censorship board.

mexican soaps are very popular in America doesn't mean mexico is going to become global entertainment power-house.

I don’t know what the solution is and blaming just Bollywood is not the answer. Many feel that Pakistani and Bangladeshi films are not up to the mark and look shoddy compared to its Bollywood and Hollywood counterparts. Some also feel that Multi-plexes may just save the dying cinema trend in Pakistan and Bangladesh, but that’s easier said than done.

The difference between Mexican soaps and the Indian Film industry is that of night and day. A better comparison would be the Indian television industry. Soaps by default aren't made for widescale distribution and Indian soaps don't have a market outside of India. Movies are a different story. Indian movies have proven to have enormous markets outside of India, and in terms of production they have reached higher numbers than Hollywood.

I read your link but I didn't see anything about Indian films being banned in Bangladesh today. The man who mentioned the ban on movies was talking about the past, before Bangladesh became a country and was still a part of Pakistan. The fact of the matter is, Bengali movies produced in India today are rountinely screened in Bangladesh with the full support of the local censors. Bengali culture is essentially the same on both sides of the border (with only religion being the main difference), so Indian Bengali movies don't pose any threat to them. I'm not sure what their views on Hindi cinema are, but I would assume that its the same as any other South Asian country.

Not entirely. Some Singaporeans, Malaysians, and Indonesians watch Hindi movies.

Furthermore, Bollywood has a pretty long history in Russia. Back during the Cold War western influences (such as Hollywood) were banned. The people needed a cheap source of entertainment, and Bollywood films weren't so contraversial, so Bollywood became fairly popular there from earlier on.

Bollywood films have always been quite popular in Burma, and not just among people of Indian ancestry. Have a look at the picture of SRK below. Pretty good, don't you think? biggthumpup.gif

Yeah, I kind of realized Bollywood had copied some other movies back when I saw a bollywood version of "Twin Dragons" (Which starred Jackie Chan). The Bollywood version starred Salman Khan I think. =P
