Close this MANILA, Philippines -- It’s a duel between University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern University for the overall UAAP championship after the first semester of competitions in the league.

The UST Tigers, who captured their ninth straight overall crown last season, ruled women’s swimming, women’s chess, women’s and juniors taekwondo and juniors table tennis.

The FEU Tamaraws highlighted their early campaign with title sweeps in the men and women’s beach volleyball and the men and women’s table tennis. The Morayta-based crew also topped men’s taekwondo and men’s chess.

De La Salle University dominated basketball by clinching the seniors and juniors titles, while the women’s crown went to Ateneo de Manila University, which also led in juniors chess and juniors-boys’swimming.

University of the Philippines swept the judo competitions and copped the crowns in men and juniors-girls’ swimming.

The UP tankers clinched their fifth straight championship, while the Tigresses romped to a fourth women’s title during the recent swimming competitions at the Trace Aquatic Center in Los Baños, Laguna.

“The swimmers stepped up to the challenge because it was a close competition,” said UP Maroons coach Noel Rivera.

The Maroons compiled 204 points to edge the La Salle Archers, who placed second at 189 despite sweeping the individual awards.

La Salle’s Enchong Dee bagged the Most Valuable Player award after winning seven gold medals and setting new league records in the 50m butterfly (26.03 seconds), 100m butterfly (56.38 sec) and 400m individual medley (4:47.30 minutes). Teammate Maxim Quilala won Rookie of the Year.

The Tigresses amassed 224.50 points to capture the women’s title over the vastly improved Lady Eagles, who settled for second at 180.50.

The Lady Maroons finished third at 162.50 despite the efforts of four-time MVP Luica Dacanay.

FEU pulled off a double championship in beach volleyball after registering a seven-game sweep both in the men and women’s tournaments held at the University of the East-Caloocan sand courts.

In taekwondo, the Tigresses posted a perfect 5-0 mark to run away with their fifth straight championship, while the Cubs secured their seventh straight crown. The Tamaraws averted a sweep by nailing their first men’s title.
