Hmong Protest Grave Desecrations In Thailand

Pat Kessler
Reporting

(WCCO) St. Paul Minnesota lawmakers are calling for an international investigation into the desecration of hundreds of Hmong graves in Thailand.

About 200 Hmong living in Minnesota rallied at the State Capitol today to protest the mass excavation of the graves at Wat Tham Krabok, a Thai refugee camp, and demand the remains be returned.

A disturbing video making the rounds of Minnesota's large Hmong community purportedly shows hundreds of graves dug up outside a temple in Thailand that was once the site of a Hmong refugee camp.

Wat Tham Krabok was a Buddhist monastery home to Thailand's largest Hmong refugee camp until most of the remaining refugees resettled in the United States in the past two years.

More than 2,000 Hmong graves are there, and about 900 have been dug up. In the video, corpses are disinterred, and in some cases they appear mutilated.

"They have dug up these relatives and then to use tools to remove the flesh from the bones, that is totally unacceptable to our culture and to our ways of life and so I am very angry about this," said Chue Lor, a St. Paul resident through an interpreter.

At the Minnesota Capitol members of the Hmong community gathered to protest and watched the House and Senate unanimously ask the State Department to investigate the grave desecrations.

"I could not imagine the horror your families would go through if you were to see these kinds of images from Sweden, or from Norway, or from Germany, or from Ireland, and seeing your grandparents or your relatives and what has happened to them," said Sen. Mee Moua, a Democrat from St. Paul.

Thousands of Hmong lived at the refugee camp until they re-settled in the United States during the last two years.

Officials at the Thailand site say there are 2,000 graves, and that the graves are being excavated because they are contaminating the local water supply.

There's no explanation for the apparent desecration of the bodies.

This is sad but, THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ARE BURIED IN A BUDDHIST LAND. Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos, three colors on the flag represent the modo religion, country, and King. Hmong people should know that before they go there. Religion is always first here you will get your @$$ dug up and cremated. Thats what some of the Thais were saying in the Video.

I dont know if it had anything to do with Buddhism. Its not really Buddhism what they are doing. They have no respect.

They were taking body parts for black market trade in human remains. So peole take these body parts to make "good luck" charms out of them etc.

It does have to do with Buddhism, and do you speak and understand Thai? I do in the video they are talking about the cremation process. I am Buddhist we believe in cremation to release to soul to heaven. If you do not want to be cremated don't get buried at a Buddhist temple or land. Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos get with Buddha or GET OUT! Religion first, Country second, King third. Always for all three countries GET EDUCATED BEFORE YOU ENTER SOMEONES LAND TO LIVE ON.

The cremation is more of a cultural thing. Not all Buddhist influence culture practices it.
In alot of countries like Vietnam, China, Korea, etc. are Buddhist they dont all cremate the bodies.
eg Old Tibetan practices do not cremate bodies. They have what is known as "sky burial"; where the body is cut to pieces and fed to the vultures. No cremation with them.

Why isnt the other graves being dug up? Why just the Hmongs?

Why isnt the WHOLE body taken but only some body parts?
If you read the article the flesh were taken but not the whole body were taken (they werent being cremated).
btw I dont recall me posting a video in the topic post. What video?

Buddhism by the way is NOT the first religion in Thailand or Cambodia or Laos. Animism/Shamanism is.

No one has the right to impose their religious beliefs on others either. If you want to talk about "religion first" then would that be okay for Muslems & Christians to impose their beliefs. I really dont think so because the implications of that would be big.

Is Buddhism really this evil? It looks like those people were taking body parts and made fun out of it without any respects to the corpses.

Or are those people just used buddhism as excuses?

I never heard my parents or people say bad things about buddhism and its evil acts.

NIGGA PLEASE...

Name the last war that has been fought in the name of Buddhism? I bet you can't. Religion is guidance in life every culture needs guidance. YOU NEED GUIDANCE WHEN YOU DECIDE TO HAVE 10 KIDS AND EAT RICE AND WATER, AND SAUSAGE AND HAVE 12 NEW YEARS EVERY YEAR. How else will you find balance in your life. BUDDHISM IS ALWAYS FIRST IN THESE 3 COUNTRIES NOT ANIMISM OR SHAMANISM. Buddhism is a peaceful religion. We are not even allowed to kill.

(troll alert) Leave the racism out.
Also if people want to eat rice with water and sausage...etc its their business. This has nothing to do with this post topic.

If anyone knows the history of South East Asia its a historic FACT that Thailand and other countries in the region fought each other. Go ask the Laotian. Go ask the Khmer. Go ask the Burmese. Go ask the Vietnamese. Thailand may call themselves Buddhists but they certainly made war.

Buddhist are also suppose to follow the Noble Eight Fold Path, one of which is: Right Speech One speaks in a non hurtful, not exaggerated, truthful way.

I highly doubt you are a buddhist.

Those people are using Buddhism as an excuse.
People have always hide behind religion to commit horrendous acts. Thailand certainly had wars like other Buddhist countries.

it sounds reasonable; but no one comes forward to defend buddhism's positions as far as hmong corpse parts were taking by the buddhists. these people were acting like a bunch criminals or evils.
