Posting it since ppl. need to know what happened there. Seems not many sources talk about Manila during WW II.
Found this site while looking for something else. Manila was called, don't know if still, the Pearl of the East before it was destroyed in WW II. It was the second most destroyed city in WW II. It seems the Philippines hads is own Nanjing (Nanking) Massacre but like I said its not mentioned much. Here are photos and explanation of what the Philippines invader did to the civilians in the city.

I think this is the most untalk about part of our history. Its a shame that people dont know how serious it really got with us and the japanese and how american soldiers really saved our freaking butts. I wonder if they even teach this at schools in the philippines.

Great Link, btw....

Wow! I didn't know there were Korean marines involved with the japanese that time...

So the Koreans has helped the Japanese during the WWII?

I had a spat once with a korean in a separate forum before and one of his retort was why we filipinos don't hate the japanese when the Japanese has done bastardly acts to us during WWII. If only I got hold of this link I would certainly had slapped it in his face...

Good job!

Yeah, i think it was estimated that in every 10 soldier there was 1 korean soldier. Alot of them were forced though, the soldiers and their family were most likely would have been killed if they didnt join.

Filipino's been through a lot! We certainly deserve more than we have now. I sort of despise Japan a bit since they have never formally apologized for any of the countries they invaded nor did they do anything to create better ties.

Ayy, if Manila City and Cebu City historic Hispanic buildings didn't get destroyed they would have look like European cities, and if the Spanish speaking Filipinos were not murdered by the Japanese and American there would be a lot of Spanish speakers, lot's of other Asians would probably go there as a substitute for Europe with beautiful tribal beaches = bigger tourism and European companies would probably invest there like Spain and France.

Let us remember that Korea was occupied for about 40 years and not 4 years. While there may have been a few wanting acceptance from the Japanese, most were like the comfort women. As the comfort women were not girlfriends the Koreans were not volunteers like Hitler's foriegn volunteers for the SS.

For the most part Korean troops of Japan were like US Navy SeaBees, support troops who were armed for self defense since a US soldier could not tell the difference between a Japanese and Korean. For the most part, those few Japanese soldiers captured turned out to be Korean laborers.

Yes but what is distressing to me is that the Korean soldiers had taken part of the atrocities against the Pilipinos. If it had been me, I would surely have turned my gun and bayonet to the oppressors (Japanese) even if I was ordered to do so.

Oh well, what's done is done and cannot be undone no more...let's just get on with our lives.

ehhh, some of them didnt really have any choice. If they had your family hostage, you would probably do the same thing assuming you are willing to risk your life to save your family. Some koreans were brainswashed or beaten/killed if they dont follow the japanese.

it is a fact that the americans destroyed the majority manila when it liberated it
just like what they did in European cities

anyways it should have been a great start, the end of the war that is, cause everything is in the rubbles
that meant a proper city planning and redesigns of the streets and canals but such a waste

I read years back (so forgive if Im off on this) that if the US chose to 'free' Taiwan first, then Manila would not have been destroyed. Cuz Japan surrendered a few weeks after the Siege of Manila. Cant really put blame on anybody though if that was the case. If I was a Filipino living at that time and was asked which country should the US liberate from Japanese control first, I would have screamed PHILIPPINES!!! from the top of my lungs.

Great link!. It's also very infuriating how people have the lack of conscience to do these things.

War brings out the worst in man. Not just the Japanese. Filipino tribes massacred other Filipino tribes they conquered back in the day . Although its just wrong to not even admit their atrocities and make efforts to help out especially now.

Knowing about the nuke in hindsight you can say that MacArthur's entire soutwest Pacific theatre campaign was not needed, a side show like the Italian campaign in Europe. That Nimitz should have had priority of effort as the entire goal of the war was to put airpower in range of the Japanese home islands.

If MacArthur wasn't such a military/political superstar and the Philippines was by passed in a gigantic island hop what would the Philippines look like today?

Lolo was a kid during the war. He told us many different stories about Japanese atrocities towards civilians. He cant help but cry everytime he tells stories like those provided in the link. Among neighbors after the war, their family was the only one complete without any casualty. But for their friends and neighbors, it's a different story. Up to now he has this inner bitterness towards Japanese people. He stops us when we start to praise Japanese culture and character.

the destruction of manila was done by japanese marines as they retreated after the landing of luzon. they were suppose to leave manila and take a last stand i think somewhere in central luzon, but the marine commandant decided to instead fight to the last in intramuros. as they retreated they destroyed and killed people. when people talk about 1945 destruction they usually say "american carpet bomb", although it is also destructive, manila was already burning when the first airborne troops saw it.

^ I read about the sacking of Manila in 1945 - and yes, you're right in that the commander of the Rikusentai (Japanese Marines) decided to stay in the city and fight it out, despite receiving orders to fall back to a more defensible position in the Central Luzon plain.

The Americans didn't "carpet bomb" the city, but the American commander of the 37th division, in the interest of sparing his own men, didn't hesitate to heavily shell any suspected Japanese positions, not caring how many Filipino civilians he killed. I sometimes wonder if an American commander would have done this in Europe if say, the German commander in Paris decided that he would fight the Allies for every street corner. My guess is that, yes - American military doctrine at the time was to expend bullets and shells instead of men, and if they had to flatten Paris to kill Germans and save Americans (and never mind how many French civilians were killed) they would have done it in a heartbeat. Heck, if I was the American commander in Manila, I would probably have done the same thing. I would do everything in my power to preserve the integrity of my command and the lives of my men. War sucks.

The natives from the provinces, rural areas and mountain areas displaced the mestizos after the war, which null think was a good thing.

I know a man born before World War 2,a friend of my Grandfather is married now to a Japanese woman, from which he has two kids.

Japanese bastards!!!

Those 2 nukes are justified.

But they should've bombed Tokyo instead and took Hirohito along with it.

Unbeknownst to most people, Chinese Filipinos organized the Philippine Chinese Wartime Hsuehkan Militia and the Ampaw Guerillas.

Many of the so-called Filipino "Nationalists" in the Philippine Congress became collaborators and traitors while their favorite scapegoat, the "intsik", became guerillas.
