Thủ tướng Nguyễn Tấn Dũng vừa xác định với Quốc Hội rằng, chính phủ đặt chỉ tiêu năm 2008 Việt Nam sẽ vượt qua ngưỡng các quốc gia đang phát triển có thu nhập thấp, tức là nứơc có mức thu nhập bình quân đầu người dưới 905 đô la một năm. Người đứng đầu chính phủ Việt Nam hy vọng tăng trưởng tổng sản phẩm nội địa GDP năm 2008 sẽ từ 8,5 tới 9%, lúc ấy GDP đầu ngừơi của Việt Nam sẽ đạt 960 đô la Mỹ mỗi năm và thuộc nhóm quốc gia có thu nhập trung-bình-thấp theo xếp loại của Ngân Hàng Thế Giới.

Last time I checked, there was no such thing as a "Korea." South Korea had garnered significant amounts of aid from the U.S. and Japan for much of the past few decades whereas Vietnam had to go it alone.

Having a high Per Capita GDP means nothing because the higher it becomes, the higher the cost of living. What Vietnam needs is to improve its Human Development Index.

You can't directly compare the two countries as they have completely different geo-political realities. Vietnam should work hard to identify its unique strengths and contingencies, so that they can improve the economic lives of their people today.

Vietnam has been a major recipient of IDA financing since 1993 when the poverty rate was 58%. By 2004 the poverty rate declined to less than 20%. Per capita GDP has increased at a rapid rate from less than US $200 in 1993 to approximately US $835 in 2007.
