OLYMPIC TRADITION
Indonesia has won 16 total medals since breaking through with silver in women's team archery in 1988. When the Indonesians beat the United States in a shoot-off for second place in '88, coach Donald Pandiangan said: "It is a silver, but for us it is more than 100 gold medals, it is more than even a gold mine." In 1992 Indonesia won five of the 16 medals awarded in badminton's debut as a full medal sport, including the men's and women's singles titles. Badminton is wildly popular in Indonesia; tournaments draw large crowds and sometimes offer six-figure prize money. Indonesia won six medals in 2000, three in badminton and three in women's weightlifting.

OLYMPIC LEGENDS
Allan Budi Kusuma and then-girlfriend (now wife) Susi Susanti won Indonesia's first gold medals in 1992, two hours apart in badminton singles. (She won first.) They returned to Jakarta as national heroes, and a car with a giant shuttlecock led the parade. They also received $200,000 apiece.

ATHENS OUTLOOK
Though not the power it once was, Indonesia still figures to be a factor in badminton at the Athens Games. After badminton, Indonesia's next best chance for medals will be in women's weightlifting, though it won just a single silver at the 2003 World Championships.

Nusantara
Olimpic i think the most acurate and fair way to determine which country is the strongest. It's telling us the most common sport in the world to be competed not like SEA games it's all depend on host country. in SEA games if the sport is not common for host country they just eliminate that from the list. and will put some sport that never heard of to be competed for gold medal.

beerchug.gif for Indonesia
purnomor
^ yeah i've always think sea games is kinda dodgy bcoz the host almost always wins the most medals even if during the previous games they weren't good at all tongue.gif
Nusantara
That's the thing now whenever one country become the host of Sea games they most likely will become the highest medal.
And they climb they are the strongest??
In the future there's should be parallel standarisation the sport competed in SEA games and in Olimpic.
akara
Taufik better win gold in Athens! embarassedlaugh.gif I love watching his matches....so damn good.
Nusantara
I never heard about his match lately does he quit from indonesian badminton player and change proffesion become trainer for singapore national team?, that is rumour i heard. Singapore perhaps could pay him more just for trainer so he no need daily excercise to practice at senayan.
purnomor
^ no, that's his coach. Taufik is still Indonesian player
e_vaholic
taufik is back! he was in singapore for a few months after that..as you saw at piala thomas..he played for indonesia..but unfortunately..we lost the game..
dalawapo
they were talking about indonesia while the indonesian gov was not going to air the olympics... but one company agreed to air the olympics in cable, but many ppl in indonesia do not have cable!
purnomor
no no its not the indo govt who dont wanna air the olympics, generally olympics is aired by private TV station RCTI since barcelona '92. however, RCTI always suffer financial loss each time it airs the olympics (barcelona '92, atlanta '96, sydney '00) so this year the station dont buy olympic rights anymore. none of other tv stations are interested either bcoz low interst from advertisers and also from audience, while the airing rights are quite expensive. so only a cable channel wanna buy the right.. its all based on commercial considerations

I think I'm gonna cry.. so touching..

Nusantara
the problem is Indonesia only walk or run in the place, we can get several bronzes or silver in every olympic but for gold usually only ONE.
One more thing most the medal is coming from badminton, I really like to know when Indonesia start thinking and use their brain and dig more deep on other sport. why other sport only 1 or 2 medals. why mostly only from badminton.

Go Indonesia beerchug.gif

Yeah, if with the present condition in which sports only got very measly budget Indonesia could win 20 olympic medals, imagine the potential if sufficient money is invested in training and facilities for sportsmen... maybe can be in top 10 or top 5, like china didn't get its first medals till 1984, while it had been competing since 1912.. look what they'd achieve with excellent training..

man..what in the world.. 20.. i can see ur guys's feeling
purnomor
LOL
Nusantara
How many persent Indonesia should put budget for sport, currently as what Taufik Hidayat (badminton player) mentioned very small. Is there any clue what other country budgeting regarding sport.
purnomor
^ Indonesia spend Rp 26 billion (US$ 2.7 million) for its Athens 2004 Olympics team, see Kompas article. Australian Olympic Committee receives AUS$ 300 million (US$ 210 million), while the US Olympic Committee spend US$ 400 million, see link. So our budget is around 1% of Australian budget, and 0.675% of the American budget. Thus, as the saying goes, "you get what you paid"
Nusantara
wow, very small less than 1% from other country team. I am surprise Indonesia always get medal in every last olympic.
Our goverment should be shame to our team. Indo olympic participant must have poorly training with that budget.
purnomor
^ I remember recently KONI wanna increase the sport budget by holding a lottery, but was opposed by MUI as "gambling" contrary to religious values..
I wish those ulamas can also come up with ideas to improve the performance of indonesian sportsmen, coz never heard anything constructive comin out of 'em the MUI sure.gif

Olympic champ urges welfare for pro athletes
Fabiola Desy Unidjaja, The Jakarta Post/Jakarta

Indonesia's Olympic gold medalist shuttler Taufik Hidayat appealed to the government to guarantee welfare for high-achieving athletes when they retired.

"I believe the government should pay more attention to the welfare of former athletes. Many of them have been overlooked and have no clear future," Taufik told reporters after meeting President Megawati Soekarnoputri at the State Palace on Thursday.

He said the absence of such assurance from the government had discouraged people from pursuing professional sports, and in general, hampered the development of national sports.

"Most parents are disinclined to let their children become athletes, saying it is a profession without any future," remarked the 23-year-old shuttler, whose victory earned Indonesia the only gold from Athens Olympics.

When asked kind of government assistance retired professional athletes might require, he replied: "I do not know ... but we have sacrificed our youth and education to become national athletes. One form may be to guarantee a job when we retire (from professional sports). That would be an incentive."

Taufik said he was unable to relay the request directly to Megawati during his meeting, as "I did not have a chance to say anything to the President".

Stories about the gloomy future faced by former athletes have come to media attention recently, with most ending up in straitened circumstances without any welfare provided as a reward for their achievements.

Taufik was invited along with other Olympic medalists to the Palace, where Megawati conveyed a statement of gratitude and appreciation for their achievements.

Silver medalist weightlifter Raema Lisa Rumbewas and bronze medalist shuttlers Sony Dwi Kuncoro, Eng Hian and Flandy Limpele were also recognized at the meeting, accompanied by National Sports Council (KONI) chairman Agum Gumelar and Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) chairman Sutiyoso.

"The president said she was highly satisfied with the athletes' achievement. She also congratulated the Olympic winners ... and hoped that the Olympic medals won by our athletes would inspire the improvement of national sports," Agum said.

He also expressed a hope that the next president would focus on national sports development.

KONI has promised a Rp 1 billion (US$108,000) cash bonus for singles gold medalists and Rp 1.5 billion for each doubles team that wins a gold.

Singles silver medalists are entitled to Rp 500 million and doubles team silver medalists Rp 750 million, while singles bronze medalists will receive Rp 250 million and doubles team bronze medalists Rp 350 million.

Indonesia has fielded 39 athletes competing in 13 sports, the majority of whom have already returned from Athens. The cycling, sailing, canoeing, track and field, tae kwon do and boxing athletes will complete their events and start their journey home as of Saturday.
