One of the best ways to eat crab is in a claypot with beehoon (vermicelli noodles)! This dish Claypot Crab Beehoon is now one of the most popular dishes in the hawker tze char places... the best one being in Toa Payoh served by the restaurant known as Mellben Seafood.

Call for special delivery wherever you are. XD

Anyway, I've had seafood in SG before and the crabs are huge (and very delicious too)! Where you guys import them from? But it's about 4 years ago.. the bill totaled SGD180.. Pretty pricey. Can't rmb the place.. but it's somewhere near the place whereby most people rollerblade / cycle.

Happen to stay in Spore for 24 hour by acident last month. Here is the food that I try in food hawker in Chinatown. When I ask for the direction to go there by used the term Mamak stall to ask for the direction like in Msia people here not understand that much though. (Even people in Hatyai understand it )

Bukkutae and Jakuay. The bukkutae taste so so for me. I should try the noodle or chicken rice instead

And this look good one but havent try

tangawizi
Aero, Chinatown is a good place to eat, but not for Bak Kut Teh. The best Bak Kut Teh is in Balestier Rd where there are several restaurants and coffeeshop stalls that specialise in this soup.

The second picture which contain many different fried foods is called "Hei Pia" (Prawn Fritters) and is usually eaten as a snack with fried noodles and chillies.

The last picture is Hokkien Prawn noodles which is one of my favourite noodle soup dishes! You should have tried that!

The chinese people in SG don't understand "Mamak Stall" because that's really a Malaysian term used in Malaysia even by the chinese folks there since everyone there speaks Malay. But in SG, if you ask a Malay or Indian person where is a "mamak stall", they would know immediately and tell u where to go for Malay and Indian food. "Mamak stall" does not include chinese food..

I don't know, my wife and her friends know what Mamak is, even know where the best mamak food you can get is. I think the iconic Mamak food is Nasi Briyani.
tangawizi
That's cuz you are a Malaysian chinese Swingdoc, and your wife is obviously exposed to Malay mamak stalls... I for one, didn't know about mamak stalls until I joined the Malaysia forum and realised what a mamak stall is... biggrin.gif

is mamak store same as mama store?!?! Mama as in Indian?!?! or one of those no-name provision stores?!?! Cause when I was in school, we used to call the provision store across the road "mama store". Like "Oei...wanna go mama store to buy snacks?" or we'll use the term "mama store" for Indian stores in the coffee shops.

Tangy...I dont think I can get SRI here...*sadz*. I know there's this place that does chilli crabs in NY cause they have a chilli crab festival here once a year..but I dont know the name of the restaurant? ever heard of it? wanna find out for me?!?!

and hey..anyone has a good fried bee hoon recipe...that doesnt use oyster sauce preferably cause I dont have it at home right now....

@Rico...hmm..what does that crab taste like? cause Maggi chilli sauce is a little sweet. maybe i'll try it if I cna get my hands on a crab.
tangawizi
I think mama store is different from mamak store. the latter refers to a hawker selling teh tarik mee goreng etc...

but i dunno... frankly... shrug.gif

here's a beehoon recipe:

soak beehoon in warm water till soft.
chop some garlic and fry in hot oil.
add a big dollop of sambal belachan, wait for fragrance to come
add the soaked beehoon and stir fry, add an egg beansprouts anything u have, some light soya sauce and msg
add some water to beehoon so it doesn't get burn but has a nice smooth texture
serve with chopped green chillies

i dunno any NYC resto that has chilli crabs but if u ever get to California, check out the Shiok! restaurant which is located in Berkeley I think? it's like a canteen style resto but they got everything, laksa, chilli crab... the works!

Unfortunately, like many Singaporeans, she fears going to Malaysia, and will only go if I ask her to come with me. The only "Singaporean" thing that I haven't yet been able to work out of her. The difficult thing is that alot of her fears are legitimate, particualrly the one where robbers and police officers target Singaporeans. But she did know about Mamak stalls before I met her, having said that her only 2 other significant boyfriends were also Malaysian laugh.gif

Good Mamak food is fabulous even if it leaves you with indigestion for a few hours after laugh.gif

I havent has the Hainanese Chicken Rice which famous in Spore but I went to the Mamak stall at night instead.
Is this Nasik Ayam in little Indian pass? Its opposite the fortuna hotel that I stay.
tangawizi
That's nasi biryani ayam.... looks so good with real banana leaf!! i think i gonna order one today! love2.gif

Bak kut teh is not thick gravy, but always a pork rib soup that runs thin. But a good one has a herbal flavor in the soup. And always served with pu er tea that's in a ceramic pot.

This is nasi Briyani, I have to admit I prefer the thigh section. Also try satay kambing, yuuuuum especially when ther is abit of fat.

The food at Suntec Convention Centre though not the best is generally pretty good. Also the rojak at the food court of Suntec City is also pretty good.

Eng Seng restaurant....best crab in singapore

One of the reviews I read....

CODE
[/code]Restaurant Name: Eng Seng Restaurant

Eng Seng Restaurant serves one of the best pepper crab in Singapore.
You can tell by the very long queue just outside the coffeeshop.

We were there at 5.25 pm and the queue was all the way to the bus stop. We waited 40 mins for our table of 4. We waited another hour before our black pepper crab arrived.

We knew that the wait will be long so we ordered BBQ Stingray as soon as we got our table. Then our dishes of You Tiao and Hor Fun arrived 20 mins after we are seated.

Why is the crab so good? It is all in their tasty black pepper sauce. we even brought along our own bread to dip into the excellent black pepper sauce.

If you are willing to wait for 1hr40 mins for your crabs, you should be in this queue for the excellent crabs.

You could make a reservation for your food but not for a seat as they go by first come first serve system. Now we know that we could have reserved our crabs and mee goreng next time. And we will be there by 5pm when they opens.

Price for 2 medium crab was $57 and the hor fun was $5 and you tiao was $6.

Favorite Dish: Black pepper crabs[code]
