where do these people fit in?

i think i've gotten wrong impressions of this country for a while. originally, i thought they were just like russians but for some reason split off into a different country after the ussr fell. then after i saw borat (which was hilarious), i thought they were sort of a mix of russian and middle eastern type. i then saw some video on youtube about kazakhstan and the people were like asian eyed, looked like mongolians or something. so i guess borat wasn't an accurate representation, considering he was played by a jew with i think lebanese heritage, and that fat guy was armenian or something. i also read that the people are turkic. when i think of turks i think of like middle eastern muslim dudes, but i guess there's different kinds. so does everyone have the wrong impression now of what they are after that movie?

and btw didn't the word cossack come from kazakh? i always thought cossacks were supposed to be white russian soldiers who were part of a special cavalry unit

Kazakhstan is very diverse...there are big Russian diasporas especially in the North....and then there are the ethnic Kazahks who are Turkic people from Central Asia, and they look very Asian indeed....and that makes up the majority of the population, and im sure lots of mixed people between these two groups...so yeah Kazakhs are the majority about 53 % right now and Russians make up about 30 %, the rest are Uzbeks or Tajiks and even ethnic Germans who migrated there during WW 2 i believe...

basicaly most people are the Kazakhs :

and the 2nd biggest group are the Russians, and an example of the ethnic Russian diaspora in Kazakhstan is San Jose Sharks starting golie Evgeni Nabokov :

eitherway, Kazakhstan should be considered 100% Asian nation

I honestly don't know why ppl consider Americans to be racist, we're angels compared to old world folk. I'm pretty sure there's a correlation b/w bigotry and IQ.
HoneyLove9
i just thought they were like russians but theres some part of them in mongolia
amir_the_man
the region in ancient times used to be inhabbited by indo iranian nomads, but since the move of turks and mongols to the region, it's become a mixture of the three. also there is russia in this and their might be a miner russian influence in some people of the country.

but most of the caucasian features seen in individuals of the country are from the indo iranians who are lighter than the average middle eastern but still look similar to iranians in facial features.

^I thought they kicked out a large number of the 'white men' out after the collapse of the USSR

Kazakh coat of Arms

previous SHF banner (made by me) embarassedlaugh.gif

Kazakh Eagle Hunter(one of teh best pics I have ever seen)

Taqïya or Töbetey - most basic hat worn by itslef or under other hats.

Qalpaq - typical nomadic felt hat.

Ayır qalpaq - more sophisticated type of felt hat.

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/5575/qazaqborik3ta.jpg
Börik - round fur hat, probably called after the wolf - böri.

ımaq or Malaqay - winter hat, very popular among the qusbegi eagle hunters

I thank BAwir$aq Yabgu of SHF for the links

heh.. those people actually look kinda cool in a way. i used to always dismiss these steppe countries as a bunch of backwards and uncultured tribes, but they seem to have a rich culture and background
tujue

Some of them are REAL steppe-people, aren't they? After all, they live on the very steppe! (in Yurts)
Their traditional lifestye seems similar to traditional Mongolian lifestyle, doesn't it?
I think there's actually Kazakhs living traditionally in Mongolia.
tujue
^yes
sadly but true

Nomadic life style is not that appealing anymore. tbh I don't see my self being Nomadic anytime soon. mabey semi-nomadic

(Well, I've done it now)

Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan is Central Asia, big difference between them and us. Even though the Kazakh and Kyrgyz people are predominantly Mongoloid, they are still very different from the rest of us Asians.
dude543
steppe people live in yurts and drink fermented yak milk called kumiss don't they? i heard rumors that they drank urine but i assume that's just a made up insult. mongolia isn't as great as it used to be. it has one kind of nasty overly industrialized town and polluted town of ulanbatar, and the rest is kind of desolate and empty, without natural resources. communism probably messed them up pretty bad but they haven't been that influential for a few centuries. they depend on their textile industry and stuff don't they
tujue
WRONG realy nice of u to refere to a line from Borat embarassedlaugh.gif

it's fermented Horsemilk not yak.

Mongolians drink tea with yakbutter

Turkic = Kumis
Mongolian = Airag

beerchug.gif

edit I just noticed this Mongolia has natural resouces like gas and metals

Central Asia is like the missing link between the Middle East and the Far East.
