Vertical Horizon live in Manila on December 7

23 November 2007 | 10:14 AM

Vertical Horizon, the band behind the hits “Everything You Want”, “You’re A God”, “Best I Ever Had”, and many more, is coming to Manila to headline a concert at the Araneta Coliseum on December 7, 2007. Also headlining the concert is “banda ng bayan”, Rivermaya, as they have their first major performance with their new vocalist. And as a special treat, there will be a set by American actor and stand-up comedian, Jamie Kennedy. The triple-header, which is presented by Smart Buddy and co-presented by Red Horse Beer, is another event under the MTV Philippines Concert Series.

Vertical Horizon

Capping off the stellar year of concerts from MTV (e.g. Ziggy Marley, Tortured Soul, Christina Aguilera, Fall Out Boy, Josh Groban, Beyonce), is Vertical Horizon, an influential band best known for their solid songwriting, a vast dynamic range, thundering rhythms, and vocal harmonies.

Their success began when their album, Everything You Want, climbed toward two million sales. They played sold-out shows with Third Eye Blind and Nine Days. And in 2000, Billboard honored them as one of the Adult Top 40 Artists of the year as Everything You Want hit the top of their Hot 100 and Adult Top 40 singles charts. With a number of albums and hits under their belt, surely their arrival in Manila is not to be missed.

Rivermaya

In late August, following the release of their all-new 5-song EP, Bagong Liwanag, Rivermaya announced auditions for a new band member. Some 500 candidates showed up for the event, which had to be extended an extra date to accommodate hopefuls not just from all over the Philippines but also from the United States, U.K. and the Middle East.

Jayson Fernandez, an 18-year old from Manguisoc, Camarines Norte, is the newest member of Rivermaya. He won the judges'—and the band's—nod hands-down during the intensely exciting grand finals for Rivermaya : Bagong Liwanag, the search for the next brother of the Rivermaya family. He joins Mark Escueta, Mike Elgar and Japanese Sergio, with whom he will share songwriting and vocalist duties. They’re currently busy working on a new album, and are set to perform some of their new songs as well as their best hits at the concert.

Jamie Kennedy

Almost ten years after alighting in Hollywood, Jamie Kennedy got his big break when he was cast in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet, and his career took off when he was cast as the articulately cynical geek, Randy Meeks, in Wes Craven's Scream, which broke box office records, spawned a successful renewal of the horror genre, and landed him a Blockbuster Best Supporting Actor Award. Roles followed alongside Steve Martin in Bowfinger and George Clooney in Three Kings. Through a slew of career successes and setbacks, Jamie does what he knows best — persevere. US teen network, The WB, gave him his own show, The Jamie Kennedy Experiment (JKX), which can best be described as a combination of Candid Camera and Saturday Night Live. JKX quickly became The WB's highest-ranking new show, attracting three million viewers each week. He also starred on Blowin’ Up with Jamie Kennedy, an MTV reality show that followed him and his friend, Stu Stone, on their quest to become legit rap stars.
