I never knew that Trinidad and Tobago were such huge Indian colonies in the Caribbean. I met someone from there a few years back and learned all about it.

Quite fascinating. Indians who have preserved all their traditions and developed all new ones independent of India.

Ever been there or thought about visiting? I can't wait.
JuicyFruit
The British took Indians as indentured servants to the Caribbean, South Africa and Malaysia. There are quite a few here, but I've never really talked to any of them.

Miss Trinidad and Tobago was an Indian this year:

Actually there aren't that many Indians in Tobago. but Trinidad has A LOT. TnT is one coutnry but the Indians are concentrated on the larger of the two islands.

Guyana also has a considerably large Indian population and there's also an Indian majority in Mauritius (off the coast of Africa) if you weren't aware of all the Indians doing 'big tingz' around the world. biggthumpup.gif

I got a lot of Trini friends. They're all up into Caribana and soca and reggae music and $hit lol. beerchug.gif And they all like basketball.

Didn't you say that you don't like them before?
jiggyiggy
Yeah there are a few here in J-ville, and they become culturally "Black," which down here involves sorta purposefully butchering the English language, not having any sense where your wasteline is, having kids you don't know about, and having a disdain with anything "White" in general, which supposedly includes an Education. The South in general is anti-intelectual.

i knew a guy from trinidad who was my roommate last year. he looked like jamaican. but i was told that there were alot of indians there. both west (native american) and east like actual india. lol that probably gets confusing.

There is now more than there was ten years ago. The Chinese have been in Trinidad for many generations now - they came at the same time as the Indians, however to a much lesser extent. Trinidad's booming economy now means a lot of opportunity for business-minded Chinese, and their presence is strong. There is a day dedicated to their arrival in Trinidad, there are Chinese senators and ministers in the government, and a couple of the island's most popular entertainment places are owned by Chinese owners. e.g. Club Zen (where Akon and the minor had that unfortunate encounter). The younger Chinese generation tends to mix more with the rest of the population, and there is far less isolation. I myself am half-Chinese, half-Indian.

Jiggyjiggy, it's unfortunate that the Trinis you have met in the South has become the basis of your judgment for all Trinidadians. I haven't seen much of your posts, but I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you were much more intelligent and perhaps, less ignorant. I'm sorry I was wrong.

Dude543, there are a lot of Indians there, they make up about 40% of the island's population. The West (Native Americans) are few and far between, they were killed off by Spanish colonizers and there are only a few left. It doesn't get confusing at all.

The British brought Indians there. Did the early Chinese come willingly?

Doesn't "West Indian" refer to people from the Caribbean?

There are a few Islands that has Indian colonies (like Jamaica). I guess thats why the British called it the West Indies.
There use to be (I think there are still some) some Indians on Islands like Cuba who were hired as plantation workers a hundred year or so ago. Dont forget Guyana also has a large Indian population. So does Malaysia & South Africa.

Both Indians and Chinese were brought there either as indentured servants or migrant workers for plantations. They were often given the derogratory name "coolies". But they are alot better off now. You will find pockets of Indians and Chinese throughout the Carribean/West Indies.

What kinda of foolishness is this?

I think you are the one confusing urself.

How can someone look Jamaican?
Why some people assume that all Jamaicans are black?
The Caribbean is very diverse, not all Jamaicans look the way u believe they should look.

If u go to Jamaica u'll be surprised to see the amount of diversity there.
I'm not in Jamaica now, but i should know since I'm Jamaican.

It's just like saying "Oh he is Indian but he looks American" would that sentence make any sense to you?

for example --
tami chin- Jamaican

Sean Paul-Jamaican

shaggy

etc etc

Here are some jamaicans.

Yes Jamaica is ethnically diverse country. One will find white caucasion Jamaicans, Asian Jamaicans, Indian Jamaicans, black Jaiamcans and then those who are mixed heritages.

A lot of Caribbean folk are like Latinos, except they can speak English. I'm a prejudiced sonnuva for saying that but it's true. The good ones are far and few b/w.

Once again how can someone look Jamaican?

Have u been to Jamaica? NO! You have no idea how diverse Jamaica is.
It's not central Africa u know.

And there is just slightly more Indians in Trinidad than blacks- but not a noticeably difference. it's about 50/50 black and Indians living in Trinidad.

And there so many blacks in Trinidad too, so saying that your roommate does not look Trinidadian but looks black,
is total bullsh!t since Trinidad is not just for Indians. The ethnic mix consists of 40.3 per cent of East Indian descent, 39.5 per cent African, 18.4 per cent Mixed, European 0.6 per cent, Chinese and Other 1.2 per cent.

I live in the Caribbean and you don't- yet your trying to preach some crap. And your gonna go by someone who said they just passed through. And I have travelled all over the caribbean.

*jiggyiggy*
And next thing people need to stop saying all Trinidad Indians are ghetto, because east Indians in Trinidad tend to follow their Hindu customs still- they worship at hindu temples- dress in sari- some not all wear the bindi, They still cook indian food, you can just go at the street side or anywhere else in Trinidad and get roti or samosas or whatever Indian food u want, they still do arrange marriages and rarely get divorce and are very good business people.
You met a few trini so u assume all trini are like that. Is ignorance your middle name?
You act as if your so perfect and love to judge everyone around you, your just stupid.

Just stop your foolishness.
