Really, the organizers representing Miss Vietnam NEEDS to learn the difference between evening gown over national costume.

They made this year Miss Vietnam wear national costume at Miss World 2007, when all other contestants were wearing evening gowns...

They made Mai Phuong Thuy wear national costume at Miss World 2006 as well, when all other contestants were wearing evening gowns...

I am not sure whether miss Vietnam 2005/2004 went through the same embarassment.... but you get my point...

I know some of you are thinking, "well, in Vietnam it can be worn as evening gown or national costume..." but the fact is that this is an international beauty constest and they should at least adapt to trend suited for the event...

But hey, they weren't so stupid during the Vinpearl audition for Miss Vietnam. Everyone there wore evening gowns...

I hope they don't embarrass Vietnam once again by wearing a national costume for Miss Universe 2008 in Nha Trang in Vietnam... icon_twisted.gif

Let's facereality! We live in a world in which everything is political stuff!
Sometimes, even Miss contest can't evade it, much worse it has became the unique game among super power!

The game of politics! thumbsdown.gif

It's not that I don't like Ao Dai, I love Ao Dai. However, it's only necessary when competing in these international beauty contest that they wear modern evening gowns during the evening gown competition and not national costume. They've made this mistake twice already, this year with Thu Thi Minh DANG and with Mai Phuong Thuy in 2006. They should at least learn from Mai Phuong Thuy... It's embarrassing when all other contestants were wearing evening gowns during the introduction, evening gown competition and towards the end when only miss Vietnam was wearing her national costume, which she considers an evening gown in her country icon_rolleyes.gif... ( Koreans, Chinese and Japanese all use their national costumes as evening wears in their home countries too, but they in these competitions they wore them when appropriate, unlike Vietnam) I hope they don't make the same stupid mistake next year at Miss Universe in Vietnam.

I concur. I strongly believe that our agency/rep should pay attention to what the norms and play along with the rest as Mongol Warrior put it, politicking. beerchug.gif

I also agree with you that Áo Dài may very well be an evening gown too but we need to blend in with everybody. On the same token, keep that thought in our heart while we can blend in seemlessly with others beerchug.gif

Áo dài is OUR EVENING GOWN. We use it the same way as Westerners use their "evening gown".

Miss Vietnam should keep wearing áo dài in global contests like Miss World beerchug.gif

And why should we be embarrassed? We should be proud instead. The fact that it's an international pageant means that every culture should be embraced in the contest, including Vietnamese culture! That so-called "evening gown" is a western clothing, don't tell me that only western culture is embraced in these pageants.

I completing understand what you mean but i believe you are misunderstanding something. in these competitions there are 3 competitions. 1st is the bakini wear, 2nd is the national custome wear, and 3rd is the modern evening gown wear. the thing that is embarrassing is that Miss Vietnam wears her national custome for both national custome and evening gown wear. it is totally expected to wear ao dai during national custome wear (since it's Vietnam's national custome), but it should be avoided during modern evening gown wear. Do you understand? the whole world sees Miss Vietnam and probably think she is lost or something. Also, at the beginning (opening show) and end (the crowning part) of each show all contestants wear their cute modern dresses while Miss Vietnam is the only constestant wearing a national custome. It's not that it's bad, it just makes the world think Miss Vietnam may be a bit "lost" and/or "confused."

I don't see anything wrong with it. Ao-dai is a modern dress as well as the traditional dress of Vietnamese. When we watched Mai Phương Thúy in Miss World and didn't see her wear áo dài for a while in the semi-finalist round, many of my friends were disappointed embarassedlaugh.gif They were like "Why isn't she wearing áo dài?" embarassedlaugh.gif See how much the Vietnamese love their national dress? embarassedlaugh.gif
