Chad Butler, better known in hip hop circles as Pimp C and one half of the rap duo UGK, was found dead in a Mondrian Hotel room this morning. He was 33 years old.

L.A. County Fire responded to a 911 call at the Mondrian Hotel, located on trendy Sunset Strip in Hollywood. They arrived to Pimp C’s sixth floor hotel room to find him dead in bed.

UGK is best known for appearing on the Jay-Z track "Big Pimpin'" in 2000, and more recently with Outkast on the song "International Player's Anthem (I Choose You)." Pimp C had just performed with fellow rap artist – Bay Area hip hop legend Too Short at the "House of Blues" in L.A. on Saturday night.

Oh yeah, it's been a hard year for TX rap.

Yeah I've been hearing about rumors, lots like, he committed suicide, he overdosed, someone poisoned him, etc. Yeah I won't believe it until anything from the official autopsy says anything.

Bun B Talks Pimp C, "The Last Time I Saw Him I Hugged Him & Told Him I Loved Him"
QUOTE
It's still UGK for life. So said rapper and UGK member Bun B, who is mourning the untimely death of his best friend and partner, Pimp C.

33-year-old Pimp C was found dead in an upscale Hollywood hotel room on Tuesday morning (December 4). Although toxicology reports are several weeks out, authorities believe the rapper died of natural causes.

The Beaumont Enterprise reports that Pimp C, who was about 6 feet tall and 260 pounds, was found on his side and likely died in his sleep. Pimp C had two prescription drugs on his person, but Rosalind Queen, the cousin of Pimp C's mother, said she wasn't aware of any heart trouble or high blood pressure problems and there was no family history of such.

Bun B, who has called Pimp C his partner since UGK formed in 1987, told Houston radio station 97.9 he is staying as positive as he can while dealing with the tragic loss.

"It's definitely not the time to start questioning why he is gone," said Bun B, who periodically broke down in tears throughout the broadcast. "His life was a blessing and a lesson. And we all have to keep that in mind. Don't look for the answers in this situation because you're not gonna find them here. The answer to that question is on the other side waiting for us." [Listen Here]

"I just want everybody to stay strong for me," he added, "and be there with me and just continue to remember the good things about him, because we're not getting another Pimp C."

Bun B, whose real name is Bernard Freeman, said as painful as the loss is, he can move on without regrets because he always let Pimp C know how much he loved him.

"I said everything I needed to say to Pimp," Bun B said. "I know the last time I saw him I hugged him and I told him I loved him, which was what I did every time I saw him, because you never know how things in life is gonna work out ... We can argue, we can cuss, fuss and fight all day long, but we gon' say I love you when it's over. I may not like you when it's over, but I love you, and you're gonna know that."

Bun B said he has been aided during this time of tragedy by a tremendous outpouring of support from fans, friends, industry executives, actors, studio engineers and fellow artists. And though he called Pimp C a musical genius - the "heart and soul" of the UGK - he said the group's run is not over.

"UGK, it's still for life," he said. "This movement now, my partner in this group is the people. It's now up to all those fans out there and all the people that loved him to help me carry this legacy on ... It's gonna be a minute, it's gonna take a awhile. But the same family that put us up is gonna keep us together."

According to the Port Arthur News, funeral services will be held for the late rapper this weekend in his hometown of Port Arthur, TX. Hannah Funeral Home is handling arrangements for the funeral, which will likely be held either Saturday or Sunday at the RobertA."Bob"Bowers Civic Center.

In related news UGK were recently nominated for a Grammy for "International Players Anthem (I Choose You)" for Best Rap Performance. They were previously nominated for a trophy for "Big Pimpin'" with Jay-Z.

L.A. County Investigating Pimp C's Death

The coroner's office says the rapper, found in his hotel room in West Hollywood, appears to have died naturally. It could take at least 6 weeks to determine the cause of death.

The L.A. County Coroner's office said today (December 5, 2007) that it will take more than a month to determine the cause of death for rapper Pimp C, the influential hip-hop figure who was found dead Tuesday morning at an upscale hotel on the Sunset Strip.

A medical examination of Pimp C is scheduled for Thursday, and Capt. Ed Winter of the coroner's office said the toxicology test won't be back for at least six weeks.

"It appears that he died naturally," he said. "There were no signs of trauma, no signs of drug paraphernalia."

Winter added that there were no signs of foul play.

Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics responding to a 911 call found the 33-year-old native of Port Arthur, Texas, lying on his bed at the Mondrian Hotel in West Hollywood.

An investigation is pending.

Pimp C, whose real name was Chad Butler, was a member of the Texas hip-hop duo UGK, which scored a No. 1 album earlier this year.

The Mondrian released a statement Tuesday saying staffers checked Butler's room after family members called asking his whereabouts.

"Mr. Butler had checked into the hotel on 28 November and, according to the callers, was to have checked out" Monday, the statement read. "Security personnel went to Mr. Butler's room and found him in bed, apparently expired. A 911 call was placed at about 9:20 a.m. and paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department responded and pronounced Mr. Butler dead."

UGK's seventh album, Underground Kingz, reached No. 1 on the national album chart in August, but mainstream stardom eluded Butler and his partner, Bun B, for most of the group's 15-year career.

In the early 1990s, the two became known for their sharp, original rap style, ribald chronicles of "gangsta life" and stripped-down beats.

Although their collaborations with higher-profile artists, including Jay-Z (on the hit "Big Pimpin") and the Oscar-winning rap group Three 6 Mafia (with which UGK recorded "Sippin on Sizzurp," an ode to getting high from drinking cough medicine), are considered hip-hop classics, UGK's more enduring claim to fame may be helping establish Southern rap.

Barry Weiss, Jive Records' president and chief executive, said in a written statement: "We mourn the unexpected loss of Chad. He was truly a thoughtful and kind-hearted person. He will be remembered for his talent and profound influence as a pioneer in bringing Southern rap to the forefront. He will be missed and our prayers remain with his family and Bun B. I've known Chad since he was 18, and we loved him dearly and he was a cherished member of the Jive family."

In 2002, Butler was sentenced to eight years in prison after falling behind on court-ordered community service.

That sentence had been imposed after the rapper-producer pleaded no contest to aggravated assault charges; he had brandished a gun during an argument with a woman at a shopping mall.

He served about half his sentence at Terrell Prison in Livingston, Texas, before being paroled in 2005. During that time, rap fans made him a cause celebrity. "Free Pimp C" T-shirts and baseball caps became popular with UGK fans across the country, and a host of rap stars called for his release.

Over the summer, the rapper-producer made headlines for disparaging a number of hip-hop celebrities, including rapper Young Jeezy, mogul Russell Simmons and R&B singer Ne-Yo.

Butler's manager, Rick Martin, released a statement Tuesday extending condolences to Butler's wife and children. "Chad was finally seeing the results of the years of love and labor that he and Bun B have put in over the years, culminating in the tremendous success of their album, Underground Kingz, " Martin said.

Pimp C. One of the very few rappers who's artistic integrity can never be questioned. Wasn't the best or most famous, but you knew damn well what you were getting from day one. He can never be accused of faking the funk.

R.I.P to one of the realest in the game.
