The first work to chronicle the history of Vietnam beginning in the legendary past--a memory that is so significant to the Vietnamese identity and belief system. Written by a native, this history portrays the Sino-Viet interdependence that lasted for 1,000 years and had such an influence on Vietnamese culture. When in the 15th century (or 10th century???), the Vietnamese finally evicted their Chinese masters, they were subsequently overrun with the forces of Westernization, the spice trade and industrialization. Chapuis's history takes us to the French conquest through the regimes of Emperors Gia Long, Ming Mang, Thieu Tri, and Tu Duc.

people in North Vietnam officially broke away from China since 938; they claimed to be an independent and different nation from the middle kingdom; they established a Kingdom called Đại Việt (大越). However, China never recognized North Vietnam as an independent nation until the time of Lư Anh Tông (1138-1175). Before that, China looked at North Vietnam as a province of China even though North Vietnam had already had its own rule, its own laws, and its own military. So that means we claimed independence in 938, but not until more than 200 years later did they recognize this. It was pretty much like the situation of Taiwan and China right now.

Do you think Vietnam and Taiwan can see that similarity? confused.gif
