Congratulation to Pak Lah and his UMNO's cronies who have succeed to change Malaysia from "Partially Democracy" to "Authoritarian State" ....

So, who can say openly to the world that Malaysia is more advanced in democracy than Myanmar ?

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 11, 2007): About 30 people, including leaders of the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih), were arrested today when they defied a court order and attempted to hand over a memorandum to oppose the constitutional amendment to extend the retirement age of Election Commission members from 65 to 66.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) treasurer Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, its information chief Tian Chua and PAS treasurer Dr Hatta Ramli were among those arrested.

However, by 5pm, at least half of those detained, including Khalid, were released.

Police checkpoints and closure of roads leading to Parliament building today caused massive jams in the city, and thwarted attempts by Bersih supporters to reach the vicinity.

However, despite the roadblocks and the heavy presence of police personnel led by Sentul OCPD Asst Comm Ahmad Sofian Md Yassin, who took their up positions as early as 4am, several Bersih leaders tried to enter Parliament.

Chua was the first to be arrested at 10.40am when he arrived in a Proton Tiara driven by PKR staff Abdul Razak Ismail. The two coolly drove past dozens of policemen standing guard along the road leading to Parliament but had to stop the car after about 50m. Abdul Razak alighted several minutes after being ordered to do so by the police, but Chua refused to budge.

Three policemen carried him from the car and tried to put him on his feet, but he lay flat on his back on the road. Several policemen then carried him into a patrol car which took him to the state police headquarters on Jalan Hang Tuah. Abdul Razak was taken away in another vehicle.

Fifteen minutes later, Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) secretary-general S.Arutchelvam and another supporter who were on foot, were arrested as they neared the road junction leading to Parliament.

Hatta, together with PAS women's wing head Dr Lo'lo Ghazali, PSM president Dr Nasir Hashim and PKR's Ang Yok Hai, who had walked from the Mahameru highway interchange, were arrested at 11.15am.

At noon, at least 40 journalists, who spotted Khalid turning up alone, converged around the PKR treasurer. He was arrested just as he was about to leave in a four-wheel drive.

Sentul OCPD ACP Ahmad Sofian Md Yassin said all the road closures were removed by 6.30pm but police would continue to guard Parliament House.

City Deputy CPO SAC I Patrick Jijes Sigore, when contacted at about 6pm, said the Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan will issue a statement on the arrests that were carried out.

According to a PKR statement, among those arrested were two journalists, Centre for Independent Journalism executive director V.Gayathry, and Writers Alliance for Media Independence chairman Wong Chin Huat.

It said the two were part of a five-member delegation which handed the memorandum to Parliament. They handed it to opposition members of Parliament, Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar (PAS-Tumpat), Salahuddin Ayub (PAS-Kubang Kerian), Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (PKR-Permatang Pauh) and Teresa Kok (DAP-Seputeh).

The other three in the delegation were the head of PAS Research Centre Dr Dzulkifli Ahmad, Suara Rakyat Malaysia executive director Yap Swee Seng and Harakah advertising head Mokhtar Rozaidi.

They five were released by police by 4pm.

As at press time, PKR said 16 people including a 13-year-old boy were still being held by police in their headquarters.

Editorial Jakarta Post

Although the ongoing anti-government movements in Malaysia are still at a very preliminary stage, Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi has threatened to impose the much feared and draconian Internal Security Act against those who still defy his warnings to cease street demonstrations.

The threat to jail protesters for an indefinite period of time seems to have worked, at least for the time being, because the number of street demonstrations has sharply declined. But the prime minister needs to remember that demands for justice, more freedom and more political and economic equality cannot be silenced just by throwing more people into prisons.

PM Badawi and the ruling United Malays National Organization (UMNO) need to remember that as long as the roots of discontent exist anti-government movements will not subside.

The experience of Soeharto before his fall in May 1998 showed there was a point where people lost their fear of the iron-fist man and did not care anymore about his brutal responses to their protests.

It is clear the current situation in Malaysia today is very different from what Indonesian faced nine years ago, especially in terms of economic conditions. In 1998, Indonesia's economy was on the brink of disaster, while Malaysia's economy today is relatively healthy. But as its economy shows declining growth amid soaring oil prices, many people have begun to feel the heat.

The attitude of many Malaysian officials in responding to the street demonstrations is similar to the attitude of Indonesian officials in 1998. They point their finger at "third parties", "western countries" or "irresponsible press" creating the political unrest. They are reluctant to accept the street facts, because they have been too long in power, enjoying all privileges.

As its constitution is perceived by the minority as discriminatory against non-Malays and non-Muslims, more Malaysians now are demanding real equalities. Sixty percent of the 26 million population is Malay -- synonymous with Muslim according to the constitution -- while the rest are Chinese, Indian and other ethnicities.

Badawi should demonstrate his strong leadership as the country prepares for an early election, because he has not been able to fully control the ruling party. Many Muslims in his ruling party are increasingly impatient with Badawi because they think things were better in Malaysia before Mahathir Mohamad handed over power to Badawi in 2003.

Mahathir is widely regarded as much more protective of Malays than his successor is. Many Malaysians perhaps forget that Mahathir left many fundamentals problems -- from an ailing economy to corruption -- for Badawi. The fact the succession from Mahathir to Badawi was not conducted by fully democratic means also created friction among the elites and dissatisfaction among the people.

The Malaysian government needs to be more sensitive in listening to the aspirations of its people. Defensive attitudes -- such as blaming others, probably including this newspaper -- will not be helpful at all.

It is time now to honestly listen to criticism from citizens. Putting anti-government activists in jail is only a very short-term solution. PM Badawi needs to show he is the prime minister of all Malaysian citizens no matter their ethnic or religious background.

Maybe you little bit confuse about the fact that Malaysia leader elected while Myanmar leader self-appointed. So only stupid people will believe your stupid story.
Duhhhhh
coolooc
I think if Lee Kuan Yew is given a free reign to govern Malaysia for just a single term, Malaysia will double its GDP, poverty will be cut by 50%, corruption will spiral down and our jail will be filled with Tun, Tan Sri and Datuk.

Of course it is just a dream but what a nightmare Malaysians are now suffering!

Your assumption is too naive. Malaysia is too complex for LKY and he would not last a single day in office. It would be chaotic and Malaysia would end up like some countries in Africa. I stop here...

(1) Some malays will say:

· Without Mahathir, who is going to fight for us?

· Without Mahathir, where can Malaysia go?

· Without Mahathir, we will all die?!.

(2) Independence malays will say:

· I don't need Mahathir to make a living.

· I don't need Mahathir to fight for my respect and dignity.

· I don't need Mahathir so that I can gain recognition on my own two feet.

But sadly to say, most Umno malays fall into category (1). The malays mindset, when are they going to change!

Umno malays mentality:

They want money but they don't want to work for it. They want investment but at the same time, they are afraid of being taken advantage by foreigners. The real fact is, nobody is taking advantage of them.

The fact is, Umno malay leader has spoil their own malays.

The fact is, Umno malay leader has never think about the malays.

The fact is, Umno malay leader in the name of "fighting for the rights of malays" has abuse their power to enrich themselves.

The fact is, Umno government has destroy their own reputation by being unfair to their own citizens include their own malays.

The fact is, Umno government has display no respect for international rules, no fair play, don't play by international rules, being a recalcitrant like Mahathir, and hence no respect from anybody on earth.

The fact is, Umno government is corrupted to the core and always wants something in return by just giving speech and signing a few documents.

The fact is, Umno government does not get much recognition from other nations except for third world countries like Zimbabwe, Somalia and Cuba.

The fact is, Umno government can never provide high skills job to the malays. MNC company can provide high skills job to the malays.

The fact is, there is no substantiate fact to justify that Umno malay leader has improve the education levels of their own malays.

The fact is, so many malays can't get high skills job is because Umno malay leader has fail to emphasize education as much as Chinese parents onto their children.

The fact is, Proton is failing. The fact is, MAS is failing. The fact is, Malaysia is failing.

The fact is, malay land will never be develop, unless Malaysian Chinese, Singaporeans or MNC company invest and create value out of it.

The fact is, Mahathir has brainwash malays into believing that Umno will be their free welfare system, insurance system, and also provides money and food for all malays as long as they can.

I do! In Myanmar, there's not even the semblance of democracy, while in MY, democracy allows Pakatan Rakyat (People's Front) humiliating the Barisan Nasional (National Front) in the last GE.

What say you?

When pple define democracy it must noted that generally it means representation from all walks of life in government which also implies self-determination. Democracy in its form is just a structure and not entirely defined in character. U can see this ambiguity in the US constitution where no clear definition exist. One quote 'their just consent from the governed'. In other words, democracy has a very vague structure but as long as self-determination and representation of the governed attained, than that is democracy.

In comparison, democracy in Msia exist and well. The governed has given consent and the government is formed. Myanmar doesnt.

Thats quite a contradictory reply.if you consider brunei with a population of 381,371 to be a nation why not a nation with 4.5 million population. facts are facts and its undeniable.

To diepolizei,

If you regard coolooc assumption as naive . Are you certain that LKY wont be up to the task, as a matter at fact managing a "DOT" is far more complicated than a larger nation i.e malaysia. small nation usually takes the greatest beating when external climate is unfavourable, any spark of racial conflict could easily devour it economically and socially, military she lacks strategic depth. malaysia possess the basic need for nation building not just building but flourish, adequate landmass (not too big and not too small), Adequate natural sources, a sizable Manpower for labour, Good geological location blah blah!!!......conclude coolooc is not being naive...i say pple who feel that nation i.e singapore is easy to manage i say give second thought about it. There are many pple out there who cant even manage a capital state let alone the entire country

Yeah its true.. Singapore cannot be considered seriously.. Our total gdp(PPP) is only $222.7billion while malaysia is $358billion.. Only 62% of Malaysia..
Our population is only 4.5million compared to Malaysia's 25million.. Only 18%..
