^^I remember you said somewhere in MalChat you took part in performance in the last year Merdeka celebration biggrin.gif
Dewa (or Dewa 19) is an Indonesian band; their songs are mostly (or all?) in Indonesian, so you probably didn't quite notice. But it's popular here, judging from the turnout on Sunday night.
Najjiah
peterpan, dewa, radja, superman is dead, steven & the coconut trees, and cherry bombshell are all AWESOME.
furansizuka
I listen to these bands: Nidji, Dewa, Gigi, Peterpan, Samsons, Letto.

I first got into Letto in 2005 when I heard some street musicians in Jakarta playing a song that caught my attention and I asked the musicians if I could record them and they said the song was actually not theirs but belonged to a professional band called Letto.

Yay! beerchug.gif another Letto's fan! The vocalist's voice is very comforting although he's not too good for live performance. The lyrics are so deep too biggthumpup.gif

The buskers that I saw in Jakarta did an acoustic, folky rendition of Sandaran Hati, and the main singer had a loud raspy and charismatic voice that made the song sound more like rootsy country music. Different from the smooth polished original version by Letto, but I liked it.
furansizuka

Oh, Sandaran Hati? I'm not fond of that song. It's too slow, methinks. I like Ruang Rindu better biggthumpup.gif There are some buskers can sing better than the original singers.

What ... why banned ??
It is no crime to lack knowledge about Indonesian rock bands. So why has this person been banned ?

Regarding freaky'n'wild Indonesian bands - I saw the hardcore punk band Punkacila (yes it is a word play on the state ideology) when they toured Australia, but I thought they were pretty awful. PAS from Bandung do the same style and much better. Among all the big-name rock bands from Indonesia, we can't forget Slank. For those who are not familiar with Slank, I would say they are sort of like the Rolling Stones or GunsN'Roses.

OK now I understand. I checked out some other posts by gadismelayusejati and this person seems to take pleasure by inflaming a topic, without having a valid argument or serious interest in the topic. I guess I was a bit naive and just accepted his/her remarks as an honest opinion. Now I can see it was just someone trying to stir up a fight.

Anybody hanging out in downtown Bandung on Saturday night ?
Some kids were killed at a rock concert by the band called Besides. icon_sad.gif

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Crush at Indonesian rock concert kills 10

JAKARTA (AFP) — Ten young people were trampled or crushed to death as hundreds of music fans tried to force their way out of a rock concert in the Indonesian city of Bandung, said police and hospital officials.

Witnesses told the local Pikiran Rakyat daily that people inside the packed venue were trying to escape the crush just as hundreds of others were surging their way inside.

"Ten people were killed, one of them has not yet been identified. Six other people were injured," Bandung police chief Bambang Suparsono told the Detikcom online news portal.

The dead are mostly teenagers. He said an investigation was underway into the incident late Saturday.

Detikcom, quoting another police officer, said the capacity of the building was for 700 people but that only around 400 attended the concert by a popular heavy metal group called Besides.

The concert was being held to launch its latest album.

However, Pikiran Rakyat said there were more than 1,500 people inside, which it said was about 500 more than the building's capacity.

"We have questioned 51 witnesses and three suspects," Suparsono said according to Detikcom. The three were all from the organisers, he said, and added that more "from the committee of the crew" could also join the three as suspects.

"The bodies of 10 people have been brought here but all but three have been taken by their family," said Toto, a staff member at the local hospital morgue where the dead were initially brought.

Suparsono said the crush occurred as people tried to leave the Asia-Africa Arts Hall in downtown Bandung.

"The results of the autopsies showed that most of the victims had suffered from breathing difficulties," the city police chief said, suggesting they were crushed to death.

One 19-year-old witness told Pikiran Rakyat: "Outside, there were hundreds of people pushing to enter. They were pushing at the gate.

"Inside, there were also a lot of people who wanted to leave because the hall was so packed that it was difficult to breathe."

Another witness said the venue was so crowded that he did not have enough room to bend down to retrieve a shoe which had come loose.

A third told the paper that while the band was playing, hundreds of people forced their way in, damaging the entrance lobby.

West Java Police Chief Susno Duaji was quoted by the Pikiran Rakyat as saying from the scene that police inside the building had asked the organisers to halt the concert because many of those in the venue had already fainted.

He confirmed most of the victims showed signs of lack of oxygen.

The art deco former movie house, next to a building that hosted the first Asia-Africa conference in 1955, remained closed to the public Sunday.

A dozen police officers were posted to close off the entrance, although passers-by could see the broken glass panels of the main entrance inside and damaged iron grilles, the state Antara news agency said.

In December 2006, 10 people died and dozens were injured in a stampede at a packed football stadium for a rock concert in Kedungwuni in Indonesia's Central Java province.

Detikcom said then the stadium, built to take 6,000 people, was filled to almost double its capacity for the concert by the group Ungu.

In 2004, eight people were killed in two separate stampedes at concerts by the pop group Sheila.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Man that is really crap. People go out for a good time and end up coming home in a coffin.
There seems to be some confusion over the exact circumstances of this tragedy.
Some reports quote witnesses saying that a group of alcohol or drug affected youths went on a rampage inside the hall, causing a stampede to get out of the place.
Some reports claim that gatecrashers trying to force their way into the concert venue caused a crush near the entrance.
One report stated that concert organisers were giving free alcoholic drinks to the kids.
While some reports state that only 400 people attended the concert, other reports claim that over 1,500 people had crowded into the hall.

Were any of our AF members there ?
Does anybody know what really happened ?

furansizuka
I know the incident but I've never heard this 'Besides band'. I think it's a home band from Bandung. Bhasqie, do you know anything about this band?
Ralf
I did a quick search for Besides, but found no information about this band. Must be an indie band.

Hmm.... I thought crushes at rock concerts was just a Western problem.
I had hoped Indonesians would be more relaxed and chilled out.

Nidji's really good. I like their new album, it's great!

Well the band in the controversy above was supposed to be a heavy metal band. Also Pec mentioned something in a previous post about Koil, Purgatory, etc....
There's a thriving underground live scene in Bandung and Jakarta, but these bands release their stuff on small indie labels, or sometimes just garage studio CDRs, so it is very difficult to get hold of those CDs if you live outside of those cities, and even harder if you live overseas.
Kresna
When in Indo I had the chance to see Peterpan live. They're very good. They have such a smooth mature sound, although I do think their leadsinger could use some more power in his voice. A couple of English guys who were there were also very impressed. Ofcourse, I immediately bought their CD.

yes..its indie grindcore band..everyone was loosing control..did mooshing...and the capacity of the place is not enough for the audiences...

good indo metal..mm...i think Seringai is the best indo rock band..just search it in google...

Yeah I guess, overcrowding in Indonesian venues must be a real killer because of the heat. Small halls often do not have airconditioning and when you factor in the bad air from so many people smoking, it seems like an accident waiting to happen.

Regarding Peterpan : I read some interviews with Arina from the band Mocca, and I got the impression that there was a bit of tension or perhaps even animosity between Arina and the lead singer of Peterpan. Was it just my imagination, or is there something going on ?

snoopy I hope you don't hate me for this, but as much as I try to get into their music, I still think NIDJI are a cheesy boyband.
I am playing their CD called Breakthrough as I am writing this, and while the music is not awful, it certainly does not grab me.
