H.K. employer fined for maltreating Pinoy maid
A Hong Kong court fined a woman for pouring hot water on her Filipino maid, news reports said Thursday.
The 68-year-old woman was fined US$1,300 after she poured hot water on her maid's chest. She also hit the maid on the head with a bowl for failing to boil water, the South China Morning Post reported.
The woman's lawyer argued against a custodial sentence because of the employer's age and frail health.
The case follows a number of convictions of Hong Kong employers in recent years for maltreating their Filipino maids.
Another woman was given an 18-month prison sentence for branding her maid's hands with a hot iron after she accidentally scorched a camisole she was ironing.
More than 200,000 women from the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand work as live-in maids for Hong Kong families, earning a government-set minimum wage of around US$420 per month.
